Downed power lines, collapsed infrastructure, damaged schools, community centres and churches – this is the aftermath of #HurricaneBeryl across several countries in the south-eastern Caribbean. Red Cross teams are on the ground, responding and supporting those who are most in need. At the Grenada Red Cross Society, Dominica Red Cross Society and St. Lucia Red Cross, volunteers are distributing emergency supplies including hygiene kits, tarpaulins, blankets and mosquito nets, as well as meals. St. Vincent and The Grenadines Red Cross volunteers are supporting assessments, providing first aid and delivering relief supplies. In Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago, Red-Cross supported shelters have been able to close, and people have returned home. In anticipation of hurricane season and the potential impact, the Jamaica Red Cross pre-positioned emergency supplies and is keeping people updated with vital information on how to stay safe now that Beryl has passed. The strength of the Red Cross is our combination of community-based and global support. The Canadian Red Cross has a history of collaborating with Red Cross National Societies in the region. Gosh, I feel like I am making a similar post every year now ?? I have supported disaster response and relief efforts for almost 20 years through military service, search and rescue training, and volunteer work. I thought I would share some of my experience and advice for folks looking to help after the devastation of Hurricane Helene. Please feel free to share. Please, DON'T SEND STUFF (clothes, toys, home goods, etc) unless it is specifically requested from a resident you know in the impacted area or a major aid organization with verified boots on the ground. The people who need the most help don't have houses to put stuff in. The stuff that is sent by well-intentioned people requires space and volunteers to sort and store it. Those resources are desperately needed by families looking for a place to seek shelter or for volunteer agencies to house emergency responders, volunteers, and equipment. Supplies such as food, water, and medicines are already being mobilized from a million different agencies. The needs of a disaster-impacted area changes by the minute and it is best to let professional organizations manage those resources and to respond to their specific requests for donations. Donate blood. ??DONATE MONEY to reliable and verified organizations. ?? Look for donation matching opportunities with your company or with fund drives to make your dollars go even further. ??? Plan in advance to volunteer your time, maybe over the holidays when people will need hugs and hot meals. ?? Sign up with a volunteer organization like American Red Cross, World Central Kitchen, or Team Rubicon to get regular updates on how you can volunteer your time. If you truly want to help long term, set a reminder on your calendar to check in with local volunteer coordinators a few months down the road. Keep checking in with local organizations for ways you can help. The process to rebuild is going to take years. Don't let these folks be forgotten after the news crews leave. The path of destruction stretches across 5 states and impacted cities, rural communities, businesses, natural areas, and wildlife. Don't let the folks in the rest of WNC, Eastern TN, South Carolina, and FL who are not getting as much national news as Asheville go unrecognized. Events like this always show how resilient and kind our communities can be. Let's focus our massive amount of love and good intentions on having the most positive impact as possible. ??

#disaster #donations #hurricane From a 24 year emergency management coordinator. NOTE, I hold 5 current FEMA certifications but this isn't official. It certainly makes people feel good to collect things and ship them to a disaster area. UNFORTUNATELY MOST OF IT WILL BE DISCARDED You will ignore this because it seems so reasonable to ship goods to a disaster area. But you are actually harming the victims. Used clothing is always sent to a landfill. Food, even canned food, will usually be tossed if not it has to be carefully examined to be certain it hasn't been tampered with or is out dated. In any case canned artichoke hearts are not popular. What happens when such shipments arrive? Volunteers who have better things to do, unpack the shipment and have to go through it all, discarding most of it, but taking up volunteer time and taking dump trucks and warehouse space needed to remove rubble and store useful items. Medicine is ALWAYS discarded but has to be handled as dangerous biological hazards using up even more resources than used clothing and shoes. Donate money to reputable charities like the ASPCA. They are saving pets and that will be good for their families who have lost so much. If you REALLY want to help hurricane victims then try to counter the lies being told to people about FEMA. Conspiracy nuts are frightening people that FEMA will take their homes, FALSE! LIE! Hurting victims. The GOP would be ashamed if they had any conscience but they don't, they just have elected jobs to protect.

With each passing year, people in America have experienced some of the costliest and most destructive storms on record. The climate crisis is increasing the frequency, intensity, and destruction of extreme weather events across the U.S. Hunger is compounded by disasters and emergencies that affect food distribution, including extreme weather events, and D-SNAP fills the gap by providing participants with emergency benefits for food.? ?D-SNAP participants ordinarily are not eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the nation’s first line of defense against hunger used by over 40 million people every month. FEMA is obstructing help from reaching victims and threatening to arrest community rescue teams while admitting it’s “short on cash for the rest of hurricane season”, maybe because it spent $640m on housing migrants. But don’t worry, Kum-A-La has promised Hurricane Helen victims the princely sum of $750 to “those who really need it”. Just about the exact handout they gave to the residents of Lanai, Maui in return for stealing their land and their children. No matter the?billions?sent to Ukraine and Israhell.? The fires are stoked between angry blue and red party supporters in another beautiful divide & conquer campaign, with the focus centered on “far-right conspiracy theories obsessed with some vague force’s supposed ability to control the weather for nefarious purposes”.
