"Applying Evidence to the Aspiration for Equity in Children’s Disability Services" This document, authored by Noreen O'Leary and Geraldine Moran, examines the reconfiguration of children's disability services in Ireland. It aims to evaluate the evidence base supporting the national program "Progressing Disability Services for Children and Young People" (PDS). The document discusses the fragmented development of disability services and the challenges faced, such as lengthy waiting lists and high staff turnover. It reviews policy documents and the extent to which they are informed by research and best practices. The authors highlight significant issues during the reconfiguration, including reduced access to services for some children and the need for a comprehensive review of policies to integrate the best available evidence. The paper advocates for systematic and evidence-based approaches to policy development to ensure equitable and effective service delivery for children with disabilities. #Disability #Children #ChildrensRights #ChildrensDisability

July is Disability Pride Month, which promotes awareness for the about 61 million adults in the U.S. who live with at least one disability. As common as disability is, many people don’t know how to talk about it or interact with disabled people. In her book “Demystifying Disability: What to Know, What to Say, and How to be an Ally”, disability rights activist and writer Emily Ladau shared thoughts about how non-disabled and disabled people can work together towards a more inclusive and accessible world. ?? Learn and use the correct language. It is always best to ask people what terms work for them based on their experiences and identity. ?? One size doesn’t fit all. A disability can manifest and impact individuals differently. Remember, no singular experience reflects that of the entire community. ?? Being an ally requires constant work. "It's a constant learning process, and that can be challenging, but when we know better, we can do better," Ladau says. #disability #disabilityawareness #disabilitypride #ADA#familytherapy #eatingdisorder #playtherapy #arttherapy #childhealth #childwellness #teenmentalhealth #atlanta #atl #georgia #mentalhealth #mentalillness #mentalwellness #mental #health #therapist #LCSW #psychology #LPC

Empowering Conversations at Disability Assembly WA ?? On Thursday, 22 August, Cheryl Atkinson, our Business Development Manager at Eternal Disability Care, took part in the Disability Assembly WA (DAWA) discussion led by Dr. Sarah Love, CEO of DAWA. The conversation focused on living with significant intellectual disability and explored critical topics affecting our community. Cheryl was honored to be part of this event, standing alongside Hon Don Punch MLA, Western Australian Minister for Disability Services, and Tim McMilliam, Channel Seven Presenter and MC. The event brought together the community, families, individuals with disabilities, and sector leaders to reflect on the March 2024 Summit. Key discussions included the impact of the Royal Commission, future legislation, new navigator roles, and the concurrent use of ILC and NDIS. We heard powerful stories of lived experience, discussed the challenges faced by families and communities, and explored how we can continue building a more inclusive, aware, and connected society. As we plan for the future, particularly with an aging population, these conversations are essential for driving positive change. For those interested in learning more or sharing feedback, please reach out via [email protected]. Together, we are challenging the gaps and moving towards a unified and thriving disability ecosystem in WA. ?? #DisabilityAssemblyWA #IntellectualDisability #HumanRights #CommunityImpact #EternalDisabilityCare #InclusionMatters #DAWA #RoyalCommission #WhatWeHeard #DisabilityEcosystem

As healthcare educators, our training programs, simulations, and educational initiatives equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and sensitivity needed for exceptional care. This includes both clinical tactics and communication techniques like empowering teams with information about inclusive and respectful language. We believe this creates a more compassionate and equitable healthcare environment for all. This Disability Pride Month, we reflect on the importance of our words. Disability Pride celebrates the unique strengths and contributions of individuals with disabilities, encouraging us to see disability as a natural part of human diversity. Instead of saying "differently abled," embrace the term "disability." It’s not just about awareness—it’s about pride. Awareness is knowing disabilities exist; pride is recognizing and valuing those who live with them. For more guidance on respectful terminology, the Disability Language Style Guide from the National Center on Disability and Journalism is an excellent resource. Together, we can foster a more inclusive and respectful environment for all. #DisabilityPride #EquitableLanguage #MedEd #ClinEd #EquitableHealthcare #Disability #HealthcareEducator #Simulation #HealthcareSimulation International Disability Alliance American Association of People with Disabilities Little People of America, Inc. https://lnkd.in/ef-JeYV

It is great to see The Law Society supporting Disability Pride month. The Society's President Nick Emmerson writes for the Law Society Gazette on why this is an important month to recognise and celebrate. "We would welcome a greater acknowledgement of this month and why it matters to the profession. Disability inclusion is something we should practise as a profession every day, not just on dates that inclusion takes place." He urges the profession to get involved, by organising events and ensuring they have disabled people as speakers. The Gazette article also shares the views from several members of the Disabled Solicitors Network Committee, including Ryan Kelly who says: "This month is about raising awareness of the different types of disability and helping people to feel comfortable with and own their disability. Having a disability isn’t something to be ashamed of or hidden – we’re all different, we all have our challenges and we should embrace and understand them. Be inquisitive, he helpful, be supportive and let’s make the world a more inclusive place." Read the article ?? https://lnkd.in/epe7FeW6 #disabilitypridemonth #disabilityinclusion #lawfirms

People with disabilities and their families here in Rathdown are really struggling to get the supports that they need. Our disability policy has been designed with the principles of the Conventions on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in mind. It is a human rights based approach to disability, where we recognise that everybody in society has the right to participate, and that those people who have disabilities have additional barriers to participation. Therefore, as a State, we need to step in and make sure that participation can happen in all areas, including education, health, housing, and employment. Some of the things that we are proposing in this new policy are that we need to see a disability ombudsman and we need to see better payments to recognise the cost of disability. Everything we do around disability, we ensure is informed by disabled persons’ organisations. #Disability #DublinRathdown #SocDems #GE24

As a health system caring for, supporting and guiding New Yorkers of all abilities, Disability Pride Month, celebrated in July, holds significant importance to us! With roots dating back to 1990, when the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, the annual observance has become another opportunity to highlight the community’s achievements and diverse experiences of individuals with disabilities. Plus, highlight ways to close gaps in care, improve health equity, overcome ableism in all its forms and counter misunderstandings about disabilities. Celebrate Disability Pride Month by checking out this list created by The Arc of the United States, a group that promotes and protects the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities -> https://bit.ly/3Wf4BBZ #MJHSdei #disabilitypridemonth #disabilities #disability
