This has been my most requested post since I started The Equine Ethologist two years ago, and I finally got around to writing it. It's a thorough deep dive into what I call the dominance-leadership complex: the pervasive idea that horses try to disrespect and dominate us at every opportunity, and that we need to actively prevent that from happening. This is complete nonsense, of course, debunked a long time ago. Yet the idea still has traction in the horse world, and is often used to justify horrendous abuse of horses in the name of "becoming their leader". In this post I try to explain why there is so much confusion around dominance and leadership in the horse world, and what we actually know about how horses interact with each other and with us.

So today is Bat Appreciation Day...who knew? Bats are fascinating, did you know, without bats, we'd say goodbye to bananas, avocados and mangoes, that night insects have the most to fear from bats(certainly not us) and that bats are the only flying mammal? As a department lead, do you sometimes feel a bit like a bat ? Busy zooming about all over the place, in the dark and winging it ? Being good operationally at your role was most probably why you were promoted to a department or team lead, right? And that's amazing but, the skills required to be a good people leader are not the same as an operational leader. You need a different set of skills and tools to succeed. The good news is you can learn , just the same as you learnt your other skills. So, stop winging it and get some leadership know-how ?? #leadershipdevelopment #beyourbest #personaldevelopment
