Recent article BMJ shows prevalence of Type 1 diabetes among older people aged ≥65 years increased by 180% between 1990 and 2019, from 1.3 million to 3.7 million. ? Management of high fasting plasma glucose levels remains a major challenge for older people with #T1D, and targeted clinical guidelines are needed. https://lnkd.in/eN9Mwuva

Problems in the mouth occur more frequently for patients with diabetes that is not under control. Plus, having gum disease may make blood sugar harder to control. Interestingly, a recent study (https://buff.ly/3TSpaBL) showed that gargling with mouthwash improves the hyperglycemic status in patients with type 2 diabetes, especially younger patients. #CGM, diabetes and heart disease, we have a huge burden of both of these dis-eases in the world and yet we have very little actual surveillance in terms of detecting early as well as preventing a second heart attack, other than the patients who are in a good system - so what I am saying is once you have had your first heart attack, IF you are on medical aid AND you ADHERE to all the measures that get put in place (and mostly are paid for by medical aid) then you are generally in a good position, but this is only a very small percentage of these patients in south africa, the MAJORITY have missed first events, no secondary measures and so the burden increases :(, there is SO much we could be and CAN do around this MAJOR cause of morbidity and mortality

These maps are a reminder that we have to stop addressing #obesity in silos. It is going to take a collective impact approach across multiple sectors to make a difference in these rates. #RDNs are an important player in prevention and treatment, but it takes an interprofessional team to provide treatment and many stakeholders to employ prevention. I appreciate the work of #OCAN and other coalition efforts to pull together any and all who are committed to identifying solutions and destigmatizing this chronic disease.
ICYMI: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released its new annual BRFSS Adult Obesity Prevalence Maps, covering 48 states. The data reveals that in 2023, more than 1 in 5 adults in all U.S. states and territories had obesity. ? These numbers remind us of the critical need for improved education, preventive care, and access to effective treatments for obesity. ? Check out the full data:?https://lnkd.in/e-DxfdWq

Jospeh knows the impact of diabetes-related kidney disease first hand. He’s one of an estimated 330,000 Australians living with diabetes who have chronic kidney disease. Most kidney failure can be prevented with early intervention however, just under a quarter (23%) of people are getting their kidneys checked within recommended timeframes. We want to change this with the introduction of a Diabetes Kidney Disease Screening Program to raise awareness of the checks and make them more convenient, and ensure early detection when treatments are most effective. Help us spark change and share your experience of having kidney checks and what could be done to make these checks easier: https://ow.ly/vSf750RCUKW
