With our current economy plunging deeper into the “white collar” recession there will be many more gaps than typical on incoming resumes. This is excellent advice for all leaders who are accountable for finding excellent talent.

It’s time to quit asking candidates about employment gaps. Here’s some breaking news: An employee’s value doesn’t change because of a gap. They’re either qualified or they’re not. There are dozens of ways to gauge that. A gap isn’t one of them. Stop introducing bias and disqualifying people with a completely irrelevant piece of criteria. The reasons people weren't employed is none of your business anyways.

Yes a career gap may signal to some that there is a problem. When the problem is that maybe the right job or fit has not come along or a recession or they had to take a break for a child or relative. You have absolutely no idea what someone else’s story is. Maybe if they are the right candidate interview them anyway if that is the only hurdle you seem is a problem. A gap could be to get another degree or training to have the skills you are looking for. Dedicating your time to education and leaving work behind to improve yourself is always a good thing so you are focused and ready for the next opportunity

I really dislike this question, just because you were 1) let go 2) changed career focus or 3) just needed some time, it shouldn’t be an issue. If the skills and experience are there, let it be. Focus on how this individual can fit in to your business and what they bring to the table.

I fully agree with this perspective. Evaluating candidates based on employment gaps introduces unnecessary bias and unfairly excludes individuals who may possess the required skills and expertise for the role. This approach may exclude highly qualified individuals who possess the necessary skills and expertise for the role but have experienced employment gaps due to various reasons such as personal commitments, health issues, or industry fluctuations. Their employment history should not solely determine their value as an employee. Instead, the focus should be on assessing qualifications and competencies relevant to the job. It's time to shift the hiring paradigm away from irrelevant criteria such as employment gaps and towards a more fair and inclusive approach that recognizes the true potential of all candidates. I fully understand and know how it feels to be asked to explain gaps in your employment. This truly hits home.

Companies shouldn’t focus on employees' career gaps. What truly matters is their expertise and skills. False job postings negatively impact the economy by causing financial losses and stress to individuals, damaging businesses' reputations, and reducing overall market efficiency. They lead to wasted time and resources, undermine trust in online job markets, and distort labor market data, making it harder to address employment issues effectively. Combating this issue requires stronger regulations, public awareness, and robust verification systems to protect both job seekers and the economy
