Chief Corporate Officer at BAT. Passionate about High Performance Leadership, Sports Fan, Part-Time Poet and Dad.
When it comes to Tobacco Harm Reduction, the UK remains a pioneer. ? In fact, it is seen as a leader already in reducing smoking incidence. That said, there remains untapped potential around regulation for smokeless products. ? We hope that pioneering, evidence-based tobacco and nicotine regulation will remain a priority for the new Government, given concern about underage use and product compliance. Collaboration is the key. The time is now to work together and bridge the gap between policymakers, public health authorities and organisations that are committed to Tobacco Harm Reduction. ? We want to reduce smoking rates and ensure that any smokeless products are appropriately regulated. That means implementing smart regulations built on robust science, quality standards and responsible marketing and access. ? To start the conversation, we’ve set out a 10-point progressive framework for what should come next. ? It’s time to take the another step forward: https://lnkd.in/e2SBishV. ? #BATScience #TobaccoHarmReduction #SmokelessWorld #ABetterTomorrow #Transformation

The UK's leadership in #TobaccoHarmReduction is commendable, particularly their success in reducing smoking incidence. However, there's untapped potential for smokeless products : Effective THR requires collaboration between policymakers, public health authorities, and THR-focused organizations. Smart regulations built on science are key to ensuring product quality, responsible marketing, and addressing underage use concerns. It’s time to take the another step forward: https://lnkd.in/e2SBishV. #BATScience #TobaccoHarmReduction #SmokelessWorld #ABetterTomorrow #Transformation

New commentary in The Lancet by Professor Rob Beaglehole and Professor Ruth Bonita is deserving of a read by anyone who wants to see continued smoke-free progress and is puzzled by the WHO's lack of endorsement for tobacco harm reduction tools such as vaping. Key out takes: ? WHO’s lack of endorsement of tobacco harm reduction limits healthier choices for the 1.3 billion people globally who smoke and who are at an increased risk of early death. ? There is no scientific justification for WHO’s position that e-cigarettes and other novel nicotine products should be treated in the same way as tobacco products. ? WHO’s current approach is to reward countries for banning e-cigarettes; 34 countries, primarily low-income and middle-income countries, now ban e-cigarettes. ? New Zealand's strategies have seen adult daily smoking rates plummet from 13.3% in 2017–18 to 6.8% in 2022–23 after e-cigarettes became widely available, a 49% decline in 5 years. ? New Zealand's approach has far exceeded the WHO's smoking prevalence reduction goals of 30% over 15 years from 2010 to 2025. COP10 is happening from Feb 5–9, 2024, with critical background papers recommending nicotine products be treated as equivalent to tobacco and regulated similarly. This approach would be a huge step backwards, with big tobacco the only winner. #vaping #publichealth #harmreductionsaveslives Jonathan Devery Ben Pryor Mark Mcgiven Qj Satchell

Driving Health Change | Public Health Specialist | Former Technical Head, Tobacco Control Cell, Ministry of NHSRC Pakistan | Former Govt. of Pakistan Representative to WHO FCTC
Unfiltered Truth: The Real Cost of Nicotine As we navigate the complex landscape of tobacco control, it's essential to separate fact from fiction. The truth is that nicotine itself is not the enemy. Evidence-based solutions like nicotine snus have proven effective in reducing smoking prevalence in countries like Sweden. Similarly, vaping products have been acknowledged by reputable health bodies like the FDA, CDC, and the UK health body as a harm reduction tool. Yet, misinformation and wrongful sponsored campaigns continue to misdirect our community, government, and media, just for little monetary gains. It's high time to set the record straight: 1. Nicotine is not the primary cause of smoking-related deaths nor causing any cancer; 2. Evidence-based solutions like snus and vaping can save lives; 3. Misinformation campaigns can have devastating consequences. This is the time to prioritize science and evidence over agendas driven by personal gain. The real cost of nicotine is not what you think. Let's work together to create a more informed and healthier society across the globe and, of course, in Pakistan. #Nicotine #TobaccoControl #HarmReduction #EvidenceBased #PublicHealth

Ram raids and tobacco - some evidence Two interesting statistics in this article. Ram raids have consistently decreased from 2023 to 2024 – have a look at the graph in this document. There is also evidence that tobacco products were only targeted in 15% of the raids, cash seemed to be the major motivator. Big policy changes are usually based on evidence - are they? https://lnkd.in/gMX-WQhS #publicpolicy #tobacco #evidencebased
