This approach extends well beyond the classroom as well. One recurring theme in nearly every role I’ve held from DEI Consultant to President of a Board of Directors is how important “Being self-aware and taking a critical look at how issues of equity and power play out …” has been. Not only is this kind of examination and analysis required to ensure inclusivity and diversity, but they are also critical to the longevity and success of all organizations.

This paper explores the concept of infracognition as a framework for understanding the occurrence of prodigy and twice-exceptionality (2e) in children. Infracognition refers to the deeply integrated cognitive processes that combine intellectual and emotional intelligence. This integration, particularly heightened in specific areas of sensitivity, leads to exceptional abilities and prodigious talents. Conversely, perceived weaknesses in twice-exceptional children are proposed to stem from the educational system's failure to meet their complex learning needs, rather than intrinsic deficits. This paper argues that 2e reflects systemic educational shortcomings and advocates for recognizing these unique learners outside traditional educational systems. https://lnkd.in/eiPvRucY

Who doesn't love a Ted Talk? In this one, Paul Zientarski, high school teacher, shares so many useful nuggets of information that further emphasize the importance of physical education integration in classrooms. He proposes that we think differently about academia, which I know is always the first step to positive change. Zientarski discusses two main problems we as a country are facing with our school systems. 1. We are lagging behind other countries in our academic skills (36th in math, 25th in reading, and 28th in science...) 2. The health issues that children in America are facing, like obesity, have spun out of control. The solution? More physical education. Schools need to be intertwining physical education with math, science, reading, social studies, and wherever possible. When we think about learning in school, we think chair and desk, paper and pencil, sitting and listening. Did you know that inactivity has replaced smoking as the #1 cause of death in the United States?! At the same time, schools have shrunk PE requirements to one day a week, or in high school, one single semester. In a thought-provoking CEDiR: Cambridge Educational Dialogue Research Group session with Dr. Sharice Clarke from the University of California, San Diego, we explored how to navigate teacher professional learning through the lens of justice-oriented dialogic pedagogy. Equity and justice-driven practices are essential in teacher professional learning, but they must be deeply contextualized. Justice only holds meaning when understood in relation to local histories and experiences. While traditional professional development often focuses on introducing new content and deliverables, there's a pressing need to slow down and dismantle the existing structures of injustice. This approach is vital for uncovering how biased and discriminatory meanings shape classroom practices. But are we truly there yet? Have we moved beyond merely understanding local injustices to fully embodying justice in our everyday practices? #injustice #equity #education #contextmatters #teacherprofessionallearning

Neurodiversity and the Science of Reading You’ve probably heard the slogan that reading is fundamental. To put a finer point on it, literacy is a cornerstone of success — both in the classroom and beyond. It’s that realization that undergirds a national movement to change the way we teach readers. The “science of reading” approach leans on systematic instruction, engaging the senses, phonics, comprehension, and more to address specific challenges readers face. Though not without its critics, the approach has caught fire and blazed a path around the United States. At least 32 states and the District of Columbia have passed laws or implemented new policies that incorporate evidence-based reading instruction. Supporters say the approach promises to unlock potential in every student — including those with learning and attention issues.
