I just spent 11 hours driving my 91-year-old father and 84-year-old mother to Atlanta to avoid Hurricane Milton. It is normally a 6 hour trip. This is why people don't leave. ?? ?? Could we have gone some place closer? Yes. But they didn't want to leave. In fact, they were refusing to leave. The only way to get them to agree to go was to take them to Atlanta to see their grandchildren. ?? We were under a mandatory evacuation, but the majority of our neighbors stayed. Here is what happens if you stay. You won't be forced to leave, but when bridges close and waters rise the safety of 1st responders is paramount. So, they won't send anyone to you during an emergency evacuation if you have a need - that means a fall, a heart attack, or to be rescued if your home is flooding. You will not get any 1st responders until it is safe to send them. So, we chose to leave for these reasons. ?? We also saw - neighbors helping neighbors. People were assisting each other put up hurricane shutters, load sandbags, and a phone tree was established in our neighborhood of everyone that was staying so people could check in and watch out for one another. ?? Your community matters. Get to know your neighbors, and make a point to talk to those who live alone and may need additional support. You don't have to be a 1st responder, but knowing your neighbor is alone and may need help during a crisis is so important. It is even wonderful not during a crisis - maybe they just need a kind hello when you see them. ?? Stay Safe my fellow Floridians. #FloridaStrong

As we wrapped up our discussion, he mentioned the immediate next steps he needed to take. Just before signing off, he said something that struck me: “I’m gonna get some sleep before the real work starts.” This statement encapsulates the reality we face as emergency managers. The response phase is often brief and, in many ways, more predictable. But it’s the recovery phase where the real marathon begins. That’s where the long-haul energy and resilience are truly tested. On October 9th Milton made landfall as a category 3 hurricane, which created several firsts for me. My first hurricane season living in Tampa, Florida. My first, time prepping for a major hurricane. My first time telling my family in MD and VA that I am not evacuating when they know me well for telling others to get the heck out Florida when I lived in Virginia. ? When the wind gusts and rain were finally over, and Milton exited, many Floridians “woke” (if they got any sleep, I know we did not) to large parts of Florida without power. ? The first thing I did was check the Florida SERT Power Outage Dashboard to see how many residences were without power. I was able to do this, because I live in one of the fortunate communities that did not lost power.? ? Over 3.3M on Thursday October 10th were without power. All I could see was red and darker red. My immediate thought was, this will take weeks upon weeks to restore, what will people do. As the days went on, the numbers and colors quickly changed. The numbers were moving in the right direction and by Monday October 14th the numbers were down to just over 300K, from 3.3M. ? While many in Florida are still picking up the pieces from back-to-back hurricanes, The impact of having pre-event resources staged, the dedication of many who drove thousands of miles to get here just in time, saved Florida from having an even worse disaster after the storm. Original Full Post: https://lnkd.in/gmBTffPn “As a Florida Shores Hurricane Ian Flood Victim— here are some things I’d wished I’d thought of/things we did. (Since you cant control it, youll want to have your head in the game. This isn’t to cause fear, it’s to equip people because we’ve been through it and wish we would’ve known. Hindsight is always 20/20). If you think your home could flood with recent happenings/track record, then maybe pay attention. We got through it and if you do flood, I promise you will too. These things may seem extreme but trust me, at the first site of our yard flooding, and this is what we are doing: ?? BEFORE YOU FLOOD/PREVENTIVE MEASURES: ?? ?have your volume on/download apps. A flash flood warning woke me up and saved me from losing way more than I could’ve. ?Documents, books, things in low drawers, pictures or basically anything on lower ground, move to countertops. Know exactly where your important info is in case you need it. That includes for your car, we lost 3 of those too. ?We lost all electric appliances because they were in our low kitchen cabinets. Move them up higher (food processor, crockpot, griddles). ?dry food- get out of lower cabinets. You’re going to be hungry while you wait for rescue. We had hot cheese and grapes to eat. Don’t be us. ?We kept our bandaids/sanitary stuff/meds/blow dryers in a low bathroom cabinet and lost it all. Anything you think you might need that isn’t in a bottle, move it up the night before. ?Turn your breaker off as soon as you start flooding even if your power is already out because you won’t be thinking of it, trust me. Somehow my magical husband did, but I sure didn’t. This can hurt you or a lineman when it back feeds. ?watch out for extension cords from your generator into the home with standing water. Seems silly to tell you that, but your brain is going to be in shock already, so let’s not shock the rest of you. ?If you have gas cans ready for your generator, don’t set them on the ground!!! Ours floated away and created toxic water all around us and in our house. ?have a bucket of some sort to keep anything electronic dry for immediate use. (Phone/flash lights). ?Get your pet food off of the ground. Have leashes on the table next to your food to get ready to leave on a moment’s notice ?Know where your paddle board/kayak is if you have one and be ready to use it. As we near the end of one of the wildest hurricane seasons yet, I keep hearing about one standout development in Florida that’s been built to be “hurricane-proof” and has come through back-to-back storms relatively unscathed compared to its neighbors. Babcock Ranch, a 17,000-acre master-planned community north of Fort Myers, had 3,000 completed homes as of May 2023, with plans for 19,500 at full build-out. This community was intentionally designed to be climate-resilient and hurricane-ready. Here’s how they’ve done it: Solar Power: Babcock Ranch is the first “Solar Town” with over 687,000 solar panels across 870 acres. They generate more electricity than they use, and with a massive solar energy storage system and fully underground transmission, they kept the lights on even when nearby areas went dark. Storm-Resistant Structures: All buildings are designed to withstand 150-mile-per-hour hurricane winds, and the high school field house is built to ICC 500 standards for storm shelters, with room for 1,343 people. Natural Water Management: A large portion of the development consists of preserved wetlands that help absorb excess water during storms. While central Texas doesn’t face hurricanes directly, we’ve all experienced the fallout from a fragile power grid in times of crisis—like the 2021 freeze. Babcock Ranch’s ability to keep the lights on is pretty appealing. When a hurricane or other natural disaster strikes, communications professionals know what it means. Especially in a 24-hour industry like healthcare or senior living. To me, the weather forecast for Hurricane Helene calls for days working and lots of internal reporting, text messages and phone calls, and a ton of typing. But you know what? I wouldn't give it up for the world. The resource I maintain during these times is the Westminster Communities of Florida Hurricane Updates page. I know what it's like to worry about your loved ones. Earlier this year, my grandmother's memory care community had to shelter from Hurricane Debby. The updates her community, Sage Lake Senior Living in Covington, La., provided were a reassurance that everything was OK. And while I don't report everything, either, just being able to share that everyone is all right is equally invaluable to our residents, family members and friends. (Our executive directors' Call-Em-All messages say more, but we keep our web messages brief in the interest of safety and privacy.) What's the right frequency? Who knows? We try to post two to three times per day once we're in the cone. We could post less often, and say more, or we could post more often and repeat ourselves. I don't know the right answer.
