I have always enjoyed watching movies in a cinema hall but lately Netflix , Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios and Disney+ Hotstar have been our comforting friends. But, it's not just about the comfort that OTT brings to you, it’s also about the pricing. And that's where I feel an event like the “Cinema Lovers Day” which is happening this time on ?????? 31???? can turn it around! Mind you, the price for a single ticket at INOX: Insignia costs ?2,100 which is about ?600 higher than my current annual Hotstar subscription. On top of that, if you take snacks and drinks, you are basically spending 5-10% of the average Indian salary. That’s bonkers! However, what one cannot take away from the theatres is the experience that they provide. And people are willing to indulge in this experience at the right price i.e. 99. This pricing helps even more as it gives you some leeway to spend money on snacks as well which we usually avoid due to the staggering prices. This was shown brilliantly last year which saw more than 65 lakh moviegoers visit cinemas making it the highest-attended cinema day of the year. The impact amplifies even further if a big multi-starrer movie runs simultaneously. However, this time it has been introduced to warm-up the business which has been otherwise quiet for the past 1-2 months due to elections, IPL and whatnot. So, it is safe to say that while the pandemic has buried the movie business, events like Cinema Lovers Day are helping it make a comeback like the Undertaker? P.S: FYI, while the normal tickets will be priced at 99, premium tickets won't be listed at this rate and if you have a decent single screen near your home, you can get tickets as low as 70 rupees! Disney recently reported a $2 billion loss in its Q2 2024 financial report, and here's why - They had to pay extra money for Star India, but its value dropped. This happened because they agreed to work with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) on a new project. Star India's income went down because they didn't renew their contract with BCCI, so they made less money from sports. Also, fewer people paid for Disney+ Hotstar, so they lost even more money. Now, RIL and Viacom18 are joining forces, which means Disney has to find new ways to make money in India. But Disney's still hopeful because they have a good partnership with RIL.
