Had an opportunity to read the op-ed from john oconnor at McKnight's Long-Term Care News on whether long-term care is evolving or de-evolving. I think the answer on the infection prevention front is simply, we don't know. And this is because of one very fundamental reason -- until we have routine, robust and required national surveillance in LTC facilities, we don't have data to know how deep the problems are and whether or not we are making progress on improved outcomes for patients. We need to require surveillance across long-term care facilities to get the data we need, similar to what we require for hospitals. We estimate there are 1M to 4M Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) in nursing homes alone, but we don't have an exact number because we don't have the measurement structures and requirements in place. It's hard to change what we don't measure. We ultimately need Congress to step in and require reporting. Then we can adequately answer John's question once we have established a baseline. #infectionprevention #infectioncontrol #healthcare #longtermcare #nursinghomes #patientsafety APIC Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services https://lnkd.in/eEwU2bck

Infection prevention deserves to be a focus in nursing homes
Chief Executive Officer at Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC)
Wanted to share APIC's statement in response to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) report. While it's encouraging that the OIG rightfully points out areas for improvement, overall we're disappointed with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) response. We've had numerous reports now that all say the same thing -- that infection prevention and control is a significant problem in nursing homes. It's time for action and we need CMS and Congress to lead these long-overdue changes. #infectionprevention #infectioncontrol #healthcare #nursinghomes #longtermcare Centers for Disease Control and Prevention US Congress https://lnkd.in/eYH7QfGM

One of the most interesting comments from APIC PPP. is that anyone with little or no education in basic sciences such as MPHs and nursing but with a CIC certification is better prepared to interpret evidence and act as a champion for key infection prevention practices within their facilities; two to three times more likely to perceive the evidence of certain infection prevention practices as strong; and, more likely to implement certain infection control measures.2,3? Hospitals with infection prevention and control programs led by a CIC??have significantly lower rates of Methicillin-resistant?Staphylococcus aureus?(MRSA) bloodstream infections.4 1 American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. AACN Certification Corporation. Safeguarding the patient and the profession: the value of critical care nurse certification. Am J Crit Care 2003;12:154-64. 2 Krein SL, Hofer TP, Kowalski CP, et al. Use of central venous catheter-related bloodstream infection prevention practices by US hospitals. Mayo Clin Proc 2007; 82: 672-678. What a jock even big organizations like UCLA, Cedars Sinai, Dignity, etc had the worst results, and yet everybody is CIC, FIFI, and WIWI certified. But in Southern California, the only hospital able to reduce infection by 90% with a proven methodology by a true hospital epidemiologist with the proper training was able to reduce incidents of disease ?? across the board https://lnkd.in/g8x_2FMD
