Two doctoral students at SIU Carbondale, Max Larreur and Nadine Pershyn, are working with SIU researchers to unlock the gray fox’s secrets in Southern Illinois using a multiphase approach called the Illinois Gray Fox Project. Both Pershyn and Larreur are planning careers as wildlife scientists at universities. They credited working on the project through SIU’s Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory and its guiding faculty with putting them on the path to success in that field.

?? ESI is once again sponsoring the Annual North American Society for Bat Research (NASBR) conference, and we are thrilled to share that our very own Wildlife Biologist, Nicole Rose, will be presenting her research! ?? Nicole’s presentation, "Group Vocal Composition and Decision-Making During Roost Finding in Spix’s Disk-Winged Bats," explores how these social bats in Costa Rica use a unique system of inquiry-response calls—think of it like playing “Marco-Polo”—to maintain group cohesion while finding roosts. Her research highlights how specific individuals in the group use higher calling rates to guide others, reducing the risk of fragmentation and improving roost-finding efficiency. We’re incredibly proud of Nicole’s work and look forward to her contribution to the understanding of bat behavior and conservation. If you're attending NASBR this year, don’t miss her presentation! This should be quite an interesting talk.
Take a [virtual] walk on the wild side with our upcoming webinar on July 16 at 4pm PT / 7pm ET. We'll explore the dynamic relationship between humans and wildlife through the perspectives of two women making strides in conservation, APW's Yamat Lengai and Yellowstone wildlife technician Taylor Rabe. As part of their Conservation Nation Fellowships, Yamat and Taylor spent time together in Yellowstone in June and will meet again in Tanzania this fall. Hear their professional journeys and insights about what it means to coexist with wildlife in Earth's incredible places. Moderated by Marcia Marsh, former COO of WWF-US, this webinar is a must-attend for conservation professionals, wildlife enthusiasts, future biologists, and anyone curious about the future of human-wildlife conflict. ?? ?? Exploring Parallels: Risk Assessment & Wildlife Biology ?? Last week, our colleague Olaf Fülling had the opportunity to attend the annual conference of the Association of German Wildlife Biologists and Wildlife Scientists (Vereinigung der Wildbiologen und Jagdwissenschaftler Deutschlands e.V.). The event proved to be an excellent platform for discussing recent developments in methodologies of wildlife biology. One of the most intriguing aspects highlighted during the conference was the striking similarity between the data collection methods used in wildlife biology and those in higher tier risk assessment. Both fields prioritize profound knowledge of animal ecology and handling, as well as comprehensive data analysis to make informed decisions. Whether tracking animal populations or evaluating potential risks, robust data collection is the backbone of reliable conclusions. The conference underscored the importance of such gatherings as forums for exchanging experiences and developing joint methodologies. By bringing together experts from different disciplines, we can foster a deeper understanding and create innovative approaches that benefit both fields. Kudos to the organizers and participants for creating a collaborative environment that bridges the gap between wildlife biology and risk assessment. Looking forward to seeing the continued evolution of these shared methodologies! #WildlifeBiology #RiskAssessment #DataCollection #Research #Collaboration #MethodDevelopment #teamtier3

It’s Endangered Species Day. Can you & your organisation help check on the status of Tasmania's raptors? Are we protecting them effectively? **More survey bookings are very much needed - deadline this Wednesday 22 May** These beautiful birds face many threats - from loss of nesting habitat and disturbance during breeding to collisions with artificial structures, vehicles and aircraft. On top of these comes a more recently recognised threat: the newer rat poisons, which are now the most commonly used. How serious are each of these threats? Are they all being sufficiently minimised? Without monitoring their populations it would be impossible to know. So, since 2018, around hundred heroic teams - members of the public - have been volunteering a little time each year to help find out, through the project Where? Where? Wedgie! However, not everyone can contribute every year, and we badly need some extra eyes in the skies! To help out - book one of the survey squares on the project's online map before next Wednesday; then, on any or all of Fri-Sun 24-26 May, look for the target bird species for six 10-minute surveys, each in a different spot in your square. It's important, interesting and rewarding. After a species lost to science is rediscovered, that's when the real conservation work begins. Re:wild's Search for Lost Species, American Bird Conservancy and the RIDGES Foundation are mounting a follow-up expedition to Papua New Guinea to learn more about cyrptic and recently rediscovered species. Re:wild, ABC and the RIDGES Foundation will return to Fergusson Island in 2025, working with local partners to learn more about Auwo (Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon) using systematic camera trap surveys to conduct a population count and potentially obtain a genetic sample from the ground-dwelling bird.
