Today is #IndigenousPeoplesDay2024 – We honor the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island as its original stewards and caretakers. As a group of scientists advocating for climate justice, we recognize that Western scientific knowledge has historically excluded and marginalized Indigenous ways of knowing, erasing their contributions from history, discussions, and decision-making processes. Scientist Rebellion acknowledges that Indigenous knowledge systems and ways of life are not only equally important but are essential alongside scientific knowledge for the survival of our planet during this climate crisis. Indigenous communities have thrived and adapted to changing environments for millennia. Their diverse, highly localized wisdom and expertise are critical to developing sustainable, community-centered responses to climate change adaptation and mitigation. Decolonizing science and our ways of thinking is no longer optional—it is vital in addressing the #ClimateCrisis. We commit to recognizing, respecting, and integrating Indigenous knowledge systems in every aspect of our work moving forward.

In the plenary session “The Crossfire Between Conflict and Climate Change,” panelists Noam Unger (CSIS), Ciaran Donnelly (International Rescue Committee), Avril Benoit (Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)), and Dr. Mohammed Mahmoud (Middle East Institute) discussed the importance of conflict-sensitive adaptation and sustainable solutions to address compounded development challenges. #ClimateAction #resilience
