This time last year I was 4 days away from becoming a full-time, single foster parent to two sisters. I was hopeful, under equipped and about to enter into 6 months of taking a pop quiz I hadn't studied for every day as a first-time parent. I learned SO MUCH about our foster systems and how they're doing the best they can to support families living through extreme brokenness. I encountered the generational impact of trauma and was both encouraged by little successes in a day and devastated by the cards some kids are dealt. Though I chose not to renew my license, I'm so glad I stepped into this role. I'm grateful for what it taught me. Sometimes that's the best way to learn, just jump off the cliff and see what awaits. If you know someone who is a foster parent, here are a few ways you can offer support: 1 - Offer to make a meal or drop off a gift card for food. Removing the prep work, planning, shopping and cook time of a meal or two helps to reclaim valuable mental energy. 2 - Ask to hear their story. A place to vent was incredibly helpful, just to get it out. There was so much that felt so heavy to process and talking it out with someone helped me to understand what I couldn't process on my own. 3 - Offer to get a background check with the agency and take the kids for an afternoon or drive them to one of the many appointments they have throughout the week. Sending light, love and safety to all those attached to the foster care system. Away from their own home, a foster child always remains under the supervision of the Dept. of Health and Human Services. Because of this, a worker from the DHHS will make regular visits to all foster families. These visits act as a layer of support and safety for both the foster parents and for the child. During these check-ins, parents are expected to address any challenges they’ve encountered during the placement so far. The worker can then use this information to make decisions, provide resources to the family, or, if necessary, find a new placement for the child. If a family needs help, the DHHS will do what they can to provide it. Because when a family thrives, the child in their care is set up for success. Stories—including our own stories— help bring communications to life, connecting audiences to the very real children and families within the foster care system and to the complexity of serving them well.?Stories move people to action, activating parts of the human brain that information and data alone don't. This is a beautiful thing, but how we tell foster care stories matters. And our guiding ethic in storytelling isn't just a list of "don'ts." The standard is much higher than doing no harm. Instead, we're called to?do unto others?as we would have them do unto us.?How would we want someone to steward our story if we were in the shoes of the children, families, social workers, or partners in the story we're telling? Swipe below for three lenses to guide dignifying storytelling. And if you work in US foster care and want to go deeper, join us forMaking the Pitch, More Than Enough's one-week communications course coming up August 19-23rd.?You can learn more here:https://lnkd.in/eRS_xusp

Are you or is anyone connected to you involved with Fostering in the UK? Please ask them to take five minutes to complete this survey. The first of its kind by Foster Carer‘s for Foster Carer‘s - to get quantitive and qualitative data to evidence the urgent need for change. We have a critical and growing shortage of Fostering families and more and more children are going into expensive residential homes with poorer outcomes. Over 650 responses in the first week. It’s time for carers - and former carers who have left the role for whatever reason - to tell it like it really is. https://lnkd.in/e_2YquF8

The fact that around 70% of young people leaving foster care struggle with money issues shows how tough it is for them as they become adults. This is a really important time for them because they suddenly have to pay for everything without the support from family that many of their friends have. It can be really hard for them, especially if they didn't learn much about money or have any savings. Without a steady income or savings, they are more likely to have money problems, which can make it harder for them to find a place to live, go to school, or keep a job. This fact shows that we really need to give extra help and resources to young people leaving foster care so they can learn about money and save for the future. #support #fosteryouth #youth #savings #moneymanagement
