In an insightful blog for the Teaching Matters series, Claire Haggett, Senior Lecturer at The University of Edinburgh, School of Social and Political Science, delves into the transformative power of academic relationships, emphasizing the role personal connections play in successful learning environments. "Building these academic relationships is both simple and difficult. What is needed is often straightforward—being approachable and willing. However, having the resources to deliver this is more challenging. It means providing the time and space to be available, creating opportunities to be in contact, and being proactive about reaching out to students." This post explores how sustained interactions, personal engagements, and proactive outreach can dramatically enhance students' educational experiences. She argues that these deep-rooted connections are not just supplementary but are fundamental to fostering a supportive learning environment that prepares students for more than just academic achievements but for real-world challenges. Key Points: - Importance of Ongoing Relationships:?Long-term interactions beyond the classroom help strengthen students' academic and personal growth. - Beyond One-off Interactions:?Continuous support throughout the student’s academic journey is critical for true academic engagement and success. - Proactive Faculty Engagement:?University educators must actively work to foster environments that encourage frequent and meaningful exchanges. This blog is part of the series on Engaging and Empowering Learning. Join Claire as she discusses how these foundational relationships shape the educational landscape and why they matter. Kieran Egan said that Western education is based on three incompatible ideas: ? Education as Socialization (age cohorts, class groupings, team sports) ?Education as learning about Truth & Reality, based on Plato (varied subjects, academic material, connection to culture) ?Education as discovery of our nature, based on Rousseau (personal sense-making, teacher as facilitator) One of these ideas may be dominant at any given time but no education system can foster all three at once. Therefore we keep trying to re-balance something that can never be balanced. It’s a constantly shifting three-legged stool.? https://lnkd.in/dFek-Xks

Prof. Cina Mosito at Nelson Mandela University and Dr. Xolani Khalo at the University of Fort Hare highlight a crucial point: Learning barriers aren't exclusive to students with special needs. Every learner can face obstacles that hinder their educational journey. This perspective challenges us to broaden our understanding of inclusive education. As educators and institutions, how can we evolve to support ALL students in overcoming these hurdles? Let's reflect: What common learning barriers do you see affecting students without diagnosed special needs? How can educational professionals innovate approaches to address these challenges?
