In this latest installment of Molecular Instruments' #onlywithHCR series, we highlight an insightful study that sheds light on how novel structures evolve in arthropods. Focusing on the carapace of the crustacean Daphnia magna, Bruce and Patel delved into whether this bivalved "cape" arose through the co-option of genes involved in other structures, like insect wings, or through an entirely different evolutionary process. #HCRimaging enabled the team to track gene activity in very small and cryptic tissues and identified the presence of vestigial-positive tissue that forms the Daphnia carapace, which also exists as a cryptic protrusion in Parhyale and Tribolium. During the 4th day of the course "Cell Culture in 3D: Theory and Praxis", 15 young researchers were selected to learn how to design, perform and characterize spheroids, organoids and tumor-like microcapsules (mono-culture and co-culture). The experimental work enabled us to cross-check the concepts previously discussed in the theoretical lectures.
