The Bellevue Art Museum in Washington State, is closing because they have run out of money....for the third time. The median income in Bellevue is $149K, so there are plenty people with good incomes to support institutions they find valuable. The following two part post is from my letter to the Editor of the Seattle Times.... As I travel the world and spend a great deal?of time in art museums and other arts organizations, I find one key commonality between successful art museums and unsuccessful ones.? The failing museums uniformly have an arrogant "we know better" attitude or sometimes it is couched in "we need to challenge our visitors, we need to educate them." That attitude directly translates into exhibitions few want to see...visitors simply do not want to come and spend money on "art" they don't relate to or like.? The same can be said for major donors, if they don't relate to your activities or really like what they see when visiting, that translates directly into corporate giving.? They want their "brand" associated with institutions that enhance their brand.? ?Supporting community culture can only go so far. If the major donors don't see the kind of community partnership return that generates dollars to their bottom?line they won't keep giving.? Financial commitments based on community spirit can only go so far. To the point of visitor numbers being? down and failing institutions wondering where all the visitors went.? It comes down to the 80/20 rule. 80% of an institution's wall & floor space should be filled with known permanent collection artwork that visitors want to come see over and over again, because they enjoy it. Only 20% of the space should be devoted to exhibitions that are "new," "upcoming artists,"? "challenging," or "educational."? Your favorite restaurant meal maybe a metaphor here.? Most successful restaurants, fast food places etc. make their money selling to customers who return again and again, and again, for exactly the same product. The new items, like the pork rib sandwich at McDonald's is only available for a short period of time and does not take away from the staple products that the customer counts on being there everyday. Museums should be no different because visitors are no different. part two follows...

The Bellevue Art Museum outside of Seattle, is closing for the third time, since they've run out of money again. Bellevue has a average median household income of $149,000, perfectly sufficient to support any Arts institution that they feel gives them value. This is the first part of a two-part post on LinkedIn and a letter to the Seattle Times that talks about why the Bellevue and other institutions of its type are failing.... "Ah, yes, Art is important. We are always looking for ways to support culture. Maybe we could sponsor one of your exhibitions." I almost always hear this kind of comment when I talk to the top executives. ?? Has it ever happened to you that when talking to an artist there is a misunderstanding? "Sure, this artist is looking for financial support or sponsorship for their cultural project." Sometimes the answer is no. It's not about supporting culture. I am not here to raise funds because this is not about support. It's about doing things right ??. I almost always have to explain that I am not looking for sponsorship for an exhibition. It's a constant challenge to convince companies that art is not just a luxury but a strategic necessity. Something I heard a lot when I started knocking on the doors of big companies is: "You will find that they are very sought after by organizations and cultural projects." There is a certain type of arrogance in considering that an artist is always looking for support. However, it turns out that it is true; many people do need it. That's why it's very important to clarify intentions before leaving room for the traditional belief: most of the time, artist means sponsorship. I remind you that the primary function of a company that makes shoes is not to make shoes, it's to make $ and the right way please.

TOP TIPS TO CONNECT WITH YOUR LOCAL ART COMMUNITY Art shows and festivals Go wander around!??Look at the art!??Find the things you like and talk to the artist.??Great collecting begins with the artist – if you see something you like tell the artist your story.??You are a ______ level collector and are looking for things in your price range that you love.??Some of the greatest friendships are forged through a common love of art.? Arts councils and other art organizations Nearly every town has an organization that devotes their time to working with local artists. That can be either a non-profit or a gallery that often posts calls for art. You can sign up to become a member for a low yearly fee ($20-$50), so that you can take advantage of the resources they have to offer. They will notify you about any upcoming development or show opportunities. Attending these events and showing support for your local artists is great for networking! Local small businesses I have found great art in coffee shops.??The shops that host local artworks usually have the contact information for the artist.??This is another way to connect with an artist whose work you love.????Check out the local coffee shops or cafes and see if anything interests you there. Facebook and other social media Facebook offers a calendar of your local events, and this is exactly how you can discover any new happenings around you. When you meet or see artists whose work you enjoy - give them a follow, show support, and stay in touch; they can be your window into your local art scene.? Volunteer A lot of people get to know others by volunteering at an organization of personal interest, which is also a great way to get to know other like-minded people.??Almost every city has a local art council.??Sign up, get involved, be actively looking for new artists to collect.

?Art is worth fighting for? I've been in the Northern Territory for a couple of years and I'm blown away by the creative affect this land has on people. Maybe it's the slower pace, the outdoors lifestyle, the proximity to the wild... but I believe it's something that runs deep in the energy of the land. Something raw, untouched and spiritual that reaches into our heart and ignites our creative core. But there's a dark side to the slowness and "small town" vibes. It attracts people who fear being seen, fear taking chances, fear failure and fear judgement... and those fears kill creativity. Yet creativity is the antidote to our society's epidemic of depression, anxiety and loneliness... Art activates hope, connection and conversation. It's worth fighting for! So, on days like these, where inviting people to step out of their comfort zone feels like pushing a boulder uphill in a sand storm, I remind myself that once upon a time, I didn't prioritise art either. I thought that my time, energy, money and focus were better spent elsewhere. I wanted to prioritise art, but I was dealing with my own inner conflicts and it was all too hard. In remembering that I have been there, I can access compassion for those who feel all the fears... but I can choose to advocate for art nonetheless, hoping that one day, others will meet me here. In the meantime, I am offering full sponsorship for 3x Yolnu artists of any age and skill level to enter the upcoming East Arnhem Regional Arts exhibition in an effort to create opportunity, access and diversity. Each sponsorship (3 available) includes: + One Exhibition Entry Fee + One Ticket to Opening Night event + welcome drink + Support with any forms, bio writing and artwork description. + Donation of canvas or frame if required + Optional mindset mentoring If you know someone in the East Arnhem region of NT who is creative and needs a loving nudge, please get them to connect with me via DM, email or courier cockatoo. ?Art can change the world, maybe that is just ONE person's world. But that is certainly one of the most worthy causes to fight for.? #inclusion #diversity #ntartist #artistopportunity

Ai question of the day: Things to do in Washington DC on the weekend of the inauguration? The inauguration is a significant event in Washington, D.C., and there are usually many activities and happenings around that time. Tickets are generally allocated through Congress members. 2. **Explore the National Mall**: Visit iconic landmarks such as the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and the U.S. Capitol. The National Mall is often bustling with activity during the inauguration weekend. 3. **Visit Museums**: Many of the Smithsonian museums (like the National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of American History, and National Museum of Natural History) are free and provide a great indoor option. 4. **Join Inaugural Events**: Look for official inaugural events or celebrations happening throughout the city, including balls, parades, and community gatherings. 5. **Take a Walking Tour**: Consider joining a walking tour focused on presidential history or the civil rights movement. Many organizations offer themed tours around significant events like the inauguration. 6. **Engage in Civic Activities**: Participate in local rallies, discussions, or events organized by civic groups to engage more deeply with the democratic process. 7. **Explore Local Restaurants**: Treat yourself to a meal at one of D.C.'s famous restaurants. Many places may have special menus or events related to the inauguration. 8. **Check Out the Nightlife**: Enjoy live music, bars, and clubs in areas like U Street or Adams Morgan for a vibrant nightlife scene. 9. **Visit Historical Sites**: Explore historical sites such as Ford's Theatre, the National Archives (to see the Constitution and Declaration of Independence), or the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. 10. **Enjoy the Winter Festivals**: If it’s wintertime, check if there are any seasonal festivals happening, like ice skating at the National Gallery of Art or holiday markets. Remember to check local event listings as the date approaches, as specific events can change and new ones can be announced. Be prepared for increased crowds and security in the area during the inauguration.
