Geosynthetics Enable Successful Construction in Challenging Ground Conditions ? Building the Longford Forest project, Ireland’s first modern activities park, posed significant geotechnical challenges due to the site’s weak soils, including peat and soft glacial till with CBR values as low as 0.7%. A geosynthetic solution for the construction of the site access roads, combining geogrids and nonwoven geotextiles, was selected to ensure the uninterrupted flow of construction traffic. ? This approach provided essential soil stabilization and reduced excavation needs and lowered costs while adhering to environmental goals. By reinforcing the road body, the geosynthetics allowed for the accelerated construction of access roads, supporting the project's timeline and ensuring long-term durability. ? The integration of these geosynthetic materials played a crucial role in overcoming ground challenges and achieving the client’s engineering and environmental objectives, facilitating the successful completion of Ireland's first modern activities park. ? Governing change: Breaking down siloes to plan and finance infrastructure for the future” – 26 September This event, co-organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers convened Enabling Better Infrastructure (EBI) programme and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), took place during Climate Week NYC. Speakers outlined how countries have encouraged cooperation in infrastructure planning by breaking down siloes and bringing in a wide range of stakeholders to promote the setting up of bankable infrastructure projects. International guidance, such as UNEP’s International Good Practice Principles for Sustainable Infrastructure and ICE’s EBI principles, were used to explore how tools shape infrastructure governance in different parts of the world. https://lnkd.in/eSV6_Qkr
