If you’re reselling a one-size-fits-all OTT product, you’ll have great difficulty coming out on top, as most global OTTs don’t care what individualization your customer might want. Even if you have developed your own product, without telecoms low code, the individualization of services to meet the customer’s requirements can be slow and costly. So if you want to get an entire organization to move from their current provider to your product, then you have to up the ante on cost-effectiveness, customization and flexibility. “One Touch Switch” was introduced on 12th Sept for broadband and landline……thought I’d give it a go……my experience was anything but!! The introduction of Ofcom’s mandated One Touch Switch (OTS) service is intended to make the whole experience ‘hassle-free’ with quicker, easier and more reliable broadband and landline switching for consumers. My first attempt was online – where I was stuck in a continuous loop that took me through the whole switching process, only to send me back to the beginning each and every time I clicked on the final step. Not to be beaten, I phoned the major triple play media brand directly – surely this would allow me to sign up for full fibre, especially when selecting one of their premium products. More than one hour later, I gave up and informed the advisor that we were no longer interested! After numerous “please can you hold whilst I find out” moments, the advisor was adamant that I could not keep my same landline number (suggesting I phone my current provider to ask them) and no engineer would install at a weekend…….despite the fact that an Openreach engineer was doing exactly that for my next door neighbour at that very moment for the same provider….and yes, it was Saturday morning! This brand promotes OTS on its website – so how can it be that their sales advisors are not supported with the same “easy & hassle-free” instructions to deliver OTS. Even more so when this is a new customer sale. It struck me that the whole dynamic of either retaining or onboarding a customer through this OTS system would make that customer interaction a major “moment of truth”. “simple”, “hassle-free”, “quicker”, “informed choice”, “power to the consumer” – now more than ever, telco brands need to make these moments matter!
