Did you crack this medical mystery? The most common cause of Cushing's Syndrome is actually excessive corticosteroid medication. While adrenal tumors, pituitary adenomas, and ectopic ACTH production can also lead to the condition, prolonged use of corticosteroids is the primary culprit in many cases. Understanding this connection is crucial for healthcare providers to carefully manage chronic conditions that require steroid treatment. By being aware of the potential side effects and monitoring patients closely, we can minimize the risk of Cushing's Syndrome. Curious to know more about Cushing's Syndrome or the proper use of corticosteroids? Feel free to ask us any questions you may have. June is #dysphagiaawareness month! The prevalence of dysphagia in the elderly nursing home population is high, with one recent review showing up to 59%. Dysphagia is often undiagnosed and untreated in the elderly, which can result in complications such as malnutrition, impaired quality of life, and aspiration and related pulmonary sequelae such as pneumonia. Pneumonia can result in re-hospitalization. Management of dysphagia is important to prevent these common preventable adverse events. A speech-language pathologist is a specialist to screen and evaluate patients with dysphagia. Instrumental assessments such as a modified barium swallow study or flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing can further assess the swallowing when indicated for patients with known or suspected dysphagia. These assessments rule out aspiration and assess the swallow physiology to determine the cause of the swallowing disorder to assist with an individualized treatment plan.

Peripheral neuropathy, a common complication of diabetes, can severely affect wound care due to the loss of sensation in the extremities. When individuals can't feel pain or discomfort, they may not notice pressure or friction on vulnerable areas, leading to the development of wounds like pressure ulcers. This is why regular skin checks and preventive care are crucial for diabetic patients. Keeping skin healthy and avoiding prolonged pressure can make a big difference in wound prevention and healing. ?? Has your child been complaining of chronic headaches? ??Have you been giving your child over the counter medications like panadol and neurofen to ease their chronic headaches? ??Does your child have Medication Overuse Headaches? Medication Overuse Headache, also known as rebound headache, ?? is a condition where frequent or excessive use of headache or migraine medications ?? leads to an increase in the frequency and severity of headaches. Instead of helping to relieve the headache, the medication begins to cause headaches. Studies have shown that children suffering from chronic headaches, in particular Tension Type Headaches, experience a higher prevalence of Medication Overuse Headaches, with rates ranging from 20% to 50%. Girls are more at risk of Medication Overuse Headaches than boys.?? When a child uses acute headache medications too often, their body can start to rely on the medication, leading to withdrawal symptoms when the medication is not taken. This withdrawal can manifest as a headache, which leads the child to take more medication, perpetuating the cycle. Medication Overuse Headaches typically occurs in children who take headache or migraine medications more than 10-15 days per month, depending on the type of medication. The 3 common symptoms of ??Medication Overuse Headaches are 1. Complaints of a headache that occurs almost daily or daily, often when the medication is wearing off. 2. The headaches may become less responsive to the medication that initially provided relief. 3. The headache might feel like a tension-type headache or a migraine, varying in intensity. If you think your child is complaining of Medication Overuse Headaches, reach out to Sydney Kids Physio ??on (02) 9790 4233 or DM us @sydneykidsphysio today to speak to one of our Expert Paediatric Physiotherapists ??about how your child can overcome their headaches without medications. #physio #myfavouritephysio #bankstown #headaches #migraines #headacherelief #tensionheadacherelief #headachesandmigraines #headachespecialist #beabetteryou #painrelief #physiotherapy #sydneykidsphysio
