Do you have a favorite Wikipedia page? Because I sure do. It’s about a Cold War-era red phone, a Sears store, an Air Force Colonel and…Saint Nick. And what on Santa’s earth am I talking about, you ask? Why it’s the story of how, 69 years ago, NORAD’s annual Santa tracking operation came to be. It’s delightful. And stressful. And shows how an Air Force Colonel named Harry Shoup went above and beyond at Christmas. ?? https://lnkd.in/euCNvWfN In LinkedIn-land, this story always makes me think of that person. You know. THAT person. The one who says, nope, this is beyond the scope of my job responsibilities and my duties end here. Which, in a high-stakes military job, Colonel Shoup could have done. But he didn’t. Instead, when confronted with a newspaper typo, a crying child, and repeated questions about Santa’s whereabouts, he went along the generous, above-and-beyond path. And that path also brought along some positive PR and a holiday initiative that still continues to this day. Fast forward to 2024 and, what started with Colonel Shoup (now known as Colonel Santa) on Christmas Eve in 1955, is now an app, a website and a volunteer-run hotline. “Each volunteer handles about 40 telephone calls per hour and the team typically handles more than 12,000 e-mails and more than 70,000 telephone calls from more than two hundred countries and territories. Most of these contacts happen during the twenty-five hours from 2AM on December 24 until 3AM on December 25.” In our heartwarming Christmas Eve conclusion to this LinkedIn lesson, remember this: when you could be a Grinch, be a (Colonel) Santa instead.
