Juneteenth is a time for reflection and action. ?? It encourages us to look back at the struggles and triumphs that were made by Black/African Americans and challenges ALL of us to observe the work that still lies ahead in the pursuit of equality and justice. ?? According to Angela Tate, Curator of African American Women's History Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, Juneteenth "is not a neutral holiday where you just show up. Juneteenth requires you to be present, in the moment, and very specific about why you are showing up to celebrate it." Therefore, as partners, advisors, and supporters, we should continually recommit ourselves to the work of equity, equality, and justice. ?? And celebrate the centuries of struggle, courage, and hope that have brought us to this time of progress and possibility. ?? At Phired Up, we honor the resilience and contributions of Black/African Americans and we stand committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every voice is heard and valued. ?? We recognize the significance of Juneteenth by advocating for equitable support, education, and access across diverse intersections represented in our organizations and on our campuses. ?? We are invested in elevating the future of all students because we know not every member and every voice in our community is seen and supported. We believe in supporting one another in creating a more just and equitable society. ?? Join us in celebrating Juneteenth and in working towards a future where freedom truly means freedom for all. ??? #Juneteenth #EqualityForAll #SocialJustice #InclusiveCommunity #CelebrateDiversity #EquityInAction #FreedomForAll

Important study, would be interesting to see if any interventions will emanate from this...Institutional support is by far the biggest constraint in my view.

My journey as a Frédéric Bastiat Fellow has been a pivotal experience, shaping my path as an emerging economist with a deep passion for policy-making and economic freedom. This fellowship offered a unique opportunity to explore the intricate dynamics of crisis response, political economy, and the power of market-driven solutions. Engaging with the diverse traditions of the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools of thought challenged me to think beyond conventional frameworks. The discussions highlighted the complexities of government intervention during crises and emphasised the profound impact of entrepreneurial, bottom-up responses. This exploration provided me with a nuanced understanding of the delicate interplay between state action, market forces, and societal needs. The contributions of Dr. Abigail R. Hall Blanco, Dr. Jennifer Brick Murtazashvili, Dr. Erwin Dekker, Dr. Jayme Lemke, Dr. Christopher Coyne, Dr. Rosolino Candela and Dr. Stefanie Haeffele enriched the learning experience, each bringing a wealth of expertise to the table. Their guidance and diverse viewpoints created a vibrant intellectual environment that fostered growth and new ideas. A particularly rewarding aspect of this fellowship was the unexpected yet exciting opportunity to collaborate with Nathan Goodman. This collaboration, supported by scholars like Jordan Lofthouse and Mikayla Novak, has opened new avenues for exploring #market-based approaches to advancing #LGBTQ+ rights and broader inclusivity in policy-making. My gratitude goes out to the Mercatus Center Academic & Student Programs team, especially Joshua Shin, whose exceptional coordination made the experience seamless. This fellowship has been more than an academic exercise; it has been a transformative journey that strengthened my resolve to advocate for economic liberty as a cornerstone of inclusive policy. With renewed energy and the insights gained, I am eager to continue this journey, leveraging the knowledge and connections from this program to advance a vision of a freer, more inclusive economy. Of course, it wasn’t just the intellectual growth that made this experience memorable. Let’s not forget the frequent flyer miles I’ve racked up — traveling back and forth to Washington, D.C., a total of four times!?? #EconomicFreedom #PolicyMaking #QueerEconomics #MercatusCenter #FrédéricBastiat

We are looking forward to our hybrid event 'Power, politics, and belonging: the lasting impacts of colonialism' organised as part of the LSE Festival: Power and Politics on Saturday 15 June! As the racial and ethnic #inequalities that we see today stem from centuries of #discrimination and #marginalisation, in order to tackle them, we will need to understand how they have been embedded in the very structures of our societies. In this event, Dr Ma?l Lavenaire, Neil Cummins, and Leah Eryenyu will explore racial and ethnic inequalities from the 19th century to the present day in an attempt to unravel the legacy of past injustices and investigate the link between #power, #politics, and #belonging.?

?? A Milestone to Celebrate! ??? Last week, I successfully defended my PhD dissertation titled: “Labour Market Activation of Migrant Women Through a Postcolonial Feminist Lens” ?? My research delves into how policymakers perceive migrant women as an untapped labor pool for ‘undesirable’, high-demand jobs—especially in domestic and care work—and how activation policies targeting these women unfold in practice. Through ethnographic fieldwork in an activation programme, I uncovered a troubling pattern: ?? Systemic victimisation of migrant women by policymakers, social workers, and even researchers. Victimisation stems from colonial narratives, framing non-Western women as powerless and defined by victimhood.? ?? This victimisation perpetuates discriminatory attitudes, systematically underestimating their capabilities, skills, experiences, and ambitions, relegating them to low-skilled jobs. This work has been deeply shaped by the voices and experiences of the women I had the privilege of learning from. ?? To the research participants who shared their stories with me—thank you for your courage and trust. ?? This journey has been as challenging as it has been inspiring, and I’m incredibly grateful to my supervisors Anneleen Forrier and Nele De Cuyper, committee members Christophe Vanroelen, Colette van Laar, Dide van Eck and Rein De Cooman, and everyone who supported me along the way. ?? Here’s to fostering critical conversations and challenging oppressive structures in labour market activation policies! ??
