Ethiopia faces a complex and divisive political landscape, with ongoing armed conflict and a lack of consensus on how to reform the country’s constitution. READ - https://lnkd.in/d9BnkT6e Some argue that Ethiopia's problems stem from a lack of democracy and a violation of human rights, leading to widespread unrest. Others contend that the ethnically-based federal system enshrined in the constitution itself is the source of the country's turmoil, creating a divide between ethnic groups and fostering secessionist sentiments. While the government has proposed constitutional amendments, the process is fraught with challenges, as political actors remain deeply divided and there is a lack of trust between the government and armed opposition groups. #ethiopia #ethiopian #africa

Government vs. non-government reporting in #Ethiopia There is a clear contrast between government and non-government media reporting on Ethiopia's conflict. While government sources emphasize operations in specific zones like West Gojam zone in Amhara, non-government outlets highlight clashes in areas such as North Shewa zone in Oromia and Southern Tigray zone in Tigray, which are less covered by the government reports. This disparity sheds light on the complexities of the conflict. Read more about the divergent reporting on Ethiopia’s conflict:?https://lnkd.in/e29T3Fey

It is truly remarkable to witness Prime Minister Abiy embarking on a journey to Rwanda for the solemn commemoration of the Rwanda genocide. In light of the appalling atrocities committed within Ethiopia's own borders, including mass killings, rape, starvation, destruction of vital infrastructure, forced displacement, and arbitrary detention, one cannot help but question the sincerity of such a gesture. As the UN International Commission of Human Rights Experts has meticulously documented the harrowing events unfolding during the civil war in Tigray, along with recent reports of war crimes perpetrated by the Ethiopian military in the Amhara region and Oromia regional state, the Prime Minister's symbolic act of placing a flower and offering prayers seems eerily hollow. While the world reflects on the lessons of past tragedies, it is disheartening to witness the same leader responsible for overseeing atrocities against his own people engage in what can only be described as a facade of empathy. Such blatant hypocrisy not only warrants condemnation but also demands accountability. It is doubtful that the Prime Minister will glean any meaningful insights from Rwanda's painful history when his own government stands accused of perpetrating war crimes. The call for accountability must ring loud and clear, urging him and his administration to face the consequences of their actions and end the cycle of violence and suffering inflicted upon Ethiopians. #Ethiopia #Tigray #Amhara #Oromia #UNHCR

Interestingly? Those countries that are supposed to support two states solution voted no. To have two states, you’ll nerd yo recognise Palestine as a state, don’t you think? Never mind, since you propose the two states solution and yet tefused to recognise Palestine as a state, why don’t you take Israel and everyone in it to your state to make the notion of two states solution plausible. Afterall, you have happily let then milked you overtime… so here is to two states solution in Germany or the US.
?? Breaking: United Nations voted to approve Palestine as a New Member state (2/3 required) - 143 Yes - 9 No. https://lnkd.in/gVSCz_d8 - Israeli ambassador shredded the UN charter in front of all states as a protest: https://lnkd.in/g5H7GY_Q Palestinian ambassador: “The General Assembly expresses its unequivocal and overwhelming support for the membership” https://lnkd.in/gVZzgiBG The NOs represent about 5% of the world population (8 Billion): United States, Israel, Argentina, Czechia, Hungary, Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau. It seems that US Law 101-246 now requires to stop funding United Nations. If that happens UN can vote to expel US from UN. It is not clear if US can veto such decision.

If we are going to ensure our interests, however grand or small, we need a strong government accountable to the people and that gets its legitimacy from the people. This will require the government to pursue the interests of the people rather than national or international. The latter will leave us disadvantaged and disenfranchised. This, while within Ethiopia, will be challenging and will require strong negotiation skills and strategic thinking on behalf of the people rather than being a yes-man/yes-men. This is particularly so considering the centralizing tendencies of PP.
