Dr. Francisco Arredondo lowers cost of IVF treatment in San Antonio, with inspiration from Toyota If you ask Dr. Francisco Arredondo what the key is to providing fertility treatment more affordably, he'll start talking about Toyota. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Arredondo studied the Japanese automaker's famous lean management system, which calls for honing a production process until it is as efficient as possible. In 2022, he helped found Pozitivf Fertility, a fertility clinic on the North Side, where he applies that principle to providing in-vitro fertilization treatment. While IVF typically costs upwards of $15,000, Pozitivf provides the service starting at $7,995, Arredondo said. "Without compromising quality, without compromising safety," he said. "The industry has told most of these people, 'It's not for you. You can't afford it.' The model of our company is we really believe that having a healthy child is a universal human right.'' The clinic, which has has 17 employees and a satellite location in Brownsville, recently raised $20 million in funding, largely from investment firm MonCap, to grow its network. Arredondo hopes to open three more clinics in the next three to five years, he said. Hailing from Matamoros, Mexico, across the Rio Grande from Brownsville, Arredondo was part of the team that performed the first IVF in Mexico in 1989. He received much of his education and has spent much of his career in the U.S. He earned a master's degree in healthcare management from Harvard University and was an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University. For four years, he practiced medicine in rural Kentucky. Feeling an entrepreneurial itch, he started a practice in San Antonio, which he sold a couple months before the outbreak of the pandemic. He founded Pozitivf with Dr. Tony Anderson, another IVF specialist. Q: Your firm seeks to make fertility treatments more widely available. Why is that important? A: Despite what people think, what this country needs is people. We've been so good at birth control that now we're in trouble. You can look at Europe, Italy, Japan, Spain; everybody has big trouble in their population pyramid. In the United States, we have a fertility rate of 1.7; this means that each woman on average has 1.7 babies. What the WHO and the UN recommends is 2.1. So we're way below already. In 50 years, we will have six times more people above 80 years old because of the improvement in quality of life and medicine, but we will have 50% fewer kids under 10 years of age. You require three working people to sustain one retiree. The biggest threat to humankind is not nuclear war, is not environmental change; it is nothingness.
