Every great manager I’ve ever worked with never lost sight of their humanity, regardless of what was happening inside the organization. Their humanity was their most differentiating gift. When we lose our humanity, we lose our ability to connect. It can feel natural to shut off our hearts and only lead from our heads when trying to protect ourselves and the company. But there is a cost associated with that behavior. ? Recently, we’ve seen in the news the dangerous impact of leaders forgetting their humanity. We saw three college Presidents focus more on legal-speak than just saying what they really believed about hate speech and felt was the humane thing to do on their campuses. As a result, they were condemned, and two resigned. We witnessed Google lay off around 6% of its workforce by simply cutting off employee access versus having an honest conversation with them first. The founder and CEO of Kyte Baby fired an employee who asked to work remotely because her baby was in the neonatal intensive care unit. The CEO came out with a scripted statement that caused even more backlash. She then finally dropped the script and remembered her humanity. She issued another statement where she said, “I was insensitive, selfish, and only focused on the fact that her job had always been done on-site, and I did not see the possibility of doing it remotely.”? ? We want our employees to be loyal and engaged, but then we don’t show up for them. Our team members are not cogs in a wheel to be used for our sole benefit. We will never build authentic relationships that way. Employees give us their time, energy, and commitment, and they expect their leaders to reciprocate. - Excerpt from my upcoming book on #management.
