As the nights are getting darker and the temperature is getting colder, now is a good to think ahead to the summer and how we can protect our ocean. I learnt on a recent regatta ?? by some excellent sailing ladies that they all try to avoid sun cream (by avoiding the sun) unless necessary and then source an ocean friendly version if they can’t avoid the sun. Did you know that when hurricanes strike marine animals react in many different ways? ?? Sharks sense the storm and swim to deeper waters for safety, while sea turtles face greater risks as their nesting grounds are often washed away, endangering eggs and hatchlings. ?? Dolphins and whales are usually able to escape, but the storm’s noise can disrupt their communication. ?? Unfortunately, fish like Groupers may suffer from barotrauma due to pressure changes, leaving them stranded on shorelines. Coral reefs, which are an essential part of marine ecosystems, can shatter under the storm's force, causing long-term damage. Seabirds may be blown off course or lose their coastal habitats, while hurricanes also sweep marine debris into the ocean, creating dangers like entanglement or plastic ingestion for marine life. ?? This is a huge pet peeve of mine, your balloons do not go to Heaven, they just kill animals, what a beautiful way to honor your loved one! ???? Balloons that are released into the sky eventually return to the ground, often landing in the ocean. Once there, they cause immense harm to marine ecosystems. Every year, seabirds, turtles and other marine creatures are killed by ingesting or becoming entangled in balloon debris. Here are a few shocking statistics that show just how dangerous balloons can be to ocean wildlife: ICC volunteers have picked up over 1.8 million balloons on coastlines worldwide. Seabirds are 32 times more likely to die from ingesting balloons than from hard plastics, making balloons the deadliest plastic for seabirds. A study found that 78% of rubber debris ingested by sea turtles came from balloons. https://lnkd.in/ea_K99_j

As ocean lovers, it's our responsibility not only to protect the ocean but also to respect the marine life that calls it home. After all, we're just guests in their world. ?? So, what are the Do’s and Don’ts of interacting with marine life? DON’Ts ?? ?? Don’t touch, ride, kick, or stand on marine life. This should be obvious, but unfortunately, disrespect still happens. ?? Remember that corals are animals, too. They may look like rocks, but they’re living organisms. ?? Don’t chase animals. You’re more likely to have a memorable encounter if they feel safe around you. ?? Don’t block an animal’s path. Many marine animals need to surface for air. Blocking their way can stress or harm them, and it’s likely to scare them off. DO’s ?? ? Stay off the seabed. Even sandy areas are home to tiny marine creatures and delicate organisms. ? Keep your hands to yourself. Many marine animals have protective layers that you could damage by touching them, and some can be harmful to you. ? Take only photos (and trash), and leave only bubbles. Removing shells or other items disrupts the ecosystem, as shells play a crucial role in ocean health. ? Be an advocate for the ocean. Kemp’s ridleys sea turtles are the smallest and most critically endangered sea turtle species. In Texas, Kemp’s ridley sea turtles occupy habitats in nearshore Gulf of Mexico waters, bays, and passes, where they feed mostly on crabs, and occasionally fish, sea jellies, and mollusks. Increasing pollution of nearshore and offshore marine habitats threatens all sea turtles and degrades their habitats. Ingestion of marine debris is another threat to all species of sea turtles. Kemp’s ridley turtles may ingest fishing line, balloons, plastic bags, floating tar or oil, and other materials discarded by humans which they can mistake for food. For all sea turtles, a warming climate is also a threat and likely to result in changes in beach morphology and higher sand temperatures, which can be lethal to eggs or alter the ratio of male and female hatchlings produced. Rising seas and storm events cause beach erosion, which may flood nests or wash them away. Imagine a giant net sweeps through your neighbourhood, completely demolishing everything in its path — your home, gardens, mailboxes, neighbours, roads, cars, pools... Everything is gone. This is what’s happening to fish ?? , corals ??, and marine mammals ?? in the EU’s “protected” waters.
