Social media won’t save us—but it can do something else. It’s not inherently good or bad. Yes, it has its downsides, but it’s also an incredible opportunity. For researchers, it’s never been easier to get your work seen by the right people, be it policymakers, people working in industry, or other scientists. What is stopping researchers around you from being more visible on social media? Comment below ??. The clip comes from a workshop that I was invited for at TU Delft back in 2022, working with Young Climate Scientists. Thanks to Behnam Taebi at Delft University of Technology.

Tuesday marked the 15th anniversary of starting my PhD at University of Leeds. While it was tough and challenging at times, it was also great fun and opened my career path for me. Thanks to my Geosciences degree I had met many PhD students and had some idea of the ups and downs of doing one. This session looks like a great opportunity to learn more so you can be better informed if it is a path for you! Of course, if you ever want to learn more about my experiences, "warts an all" do drop me a line!
Are you thinking about applying to do a PhD in weather or climate, but not sure where to start? This virtual event is for those nearing the end of their undergraduate or Master’s study, who are thinking about next steps. You will have the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of current and previous PhD students, as well as those involved with supervision and recruitment. This event will arm you with the knowledge to make the best decision for you and the tools to write an excellent application. Register at https://lnkd.in/eUqs7Z2m. ?? Thursday 10 October, 13:00-14:30

Postdoctoral position in??climate science at UNSW Sydney My colleague Andréa Taschetto and I are recruiting. Are you familiar with climate model simulations? Are you interested in extreme rainfall events: those that generate groundwater recharge? Are you interested in ENSO? We are investigating the links between climate drivers such as ENSO, high magnitude rainfall events and groundwater recharge, to help understand how climate drivers affect our groundwater resources. New Publication Alert: Insights from FRACTAL on Collaborative Responses to African Urban Climate Risks We’re excited to share a new publication by CASCADE member Alice McClure and co-authors, which explores how climate scientists adapt through transdisciplinary approaches. This work is particularly significant for CASCADE, as it builds on the success of ?Future Resilience of African CiTies and Lands (FRACTAL) project (https://lnkd.in/dygpi8_V). The paper emphasizes the need for evolving scientific activities to address complex challenges like African urban climate risks, which require collaborative, cross-disciplinary responses. FRACTAL provided many climate scientists their first experience in context-led, collaborative learning—insights that continue to shape CASCADE’s mission. We're excited to celebrate student engagement in cutting-edge research! We're thrilled to announce an exciting milestone: our students have taken steps into the world of scientific research by conducting an in-depth review of a peer-reviewed scientific paper! This experience is a testament to their dedication, curiosity, and passion for learning. At the Young Scientist Academy, we believe in the power of hands-on learning and the importance of engaging students in real-world scientific inquiry. This project aimed not only to deepen their understanding of the subject matter but also to develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and an appreciation for the meticulous work involved in scientific research. Here’s a glimpse of what this journey entailed: Deep Dive into Content The review process required the students to thoroughly understand the paper’s hypothesis, methodology, results, and conclusions. They engaged in group discussions, breaking down complex concepts and debating interpretations. Critical Analysis Beyond comprehension, the students were encouraged to critique the paper. They assessed the strengths and weaknesses of the study, considered alternative approaches, and discussed the broader implications of the findings. This critical perspective is crucial for anyone aspiring to contribute to scientific knowledge. Collaborative Effort This was a team effort, fostering collaboration and communication skills between students from New Hanover County Schools (Edwin A Alderman Elementary School, New Hanover High School, John T Hoggard High School), and many of these students are refugees from Syria. Students learned the value of diverse perspectives and the importance of constructive feedback. Each member brought unique insights, enriching the overall analysis. It is amazing what youth can achieve when provided the opportunity to experience STEM without barriers. ----- Looking Ahead: This experience is just the beginning. We aim to integrate more of these peer reviews into our programs, preparing our students to be the next generation of innovators, researchers, and thought leaders. A big thank you to our dedicated staff for guiding the students through this process and to the students for their enthusiasm and hard work. This initiative has not only enhanced their academic skills but also ignited a passion for scientific discovery that we hope will stay with them throughout their careers. Congratulations to all the students involved! Let's continue to strive for excellence and push the boundaries of our knowledge together. #StudentResearch #ScientificReview #EducationExcellence #FutureScientists #HandsOnLearning #CriticalThinking #Collaboration #InnovationInEducation #STEMEducation https://lnkd.in/eyFCErNS

Major new initiative regrouping all Academies Science, Engineering and Medicine to guide decision making
Climate scientist & science communicator | Engages business, government, & philanthropic leaders on climate issues | Expert on Greenland Ice Sheet & Arctic | Featured in AP, BBC, CNN, NPR, NYT, & more
I often see evidence that decision makers of many stripes are moving forward without the full suite of climate science knowledge and information required to ask smart questions and understand realistic ranges for future outcomes. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine new Climate Crossroads Congressional Fellowship aims to bring Congressional staff up to speed on climate science and science-informed policy making. The training is designed for staffers from any political party and I expect it will be an excellent opportunity for networking. Share the opportunity with representatives and staffers. May 30th application deadline. https://lnkd.in/gKkKy4D8 #policy #science #climate

April is #CitizenScience month! ?? Citizen science highlights the important role citizens play in science and research by gathering first-hand information on a variety of topics including health, climate, energy and more! Their input and active participation in the process helps scientists develop new knowledge and innovations that impact society and policymaking. However, small-scale national citizen science projects often face practical, technical, or conceptual challenges and lack the support, the transnational coordination skills, and the resources, to upscale their efforts to a transnational level. ?? That is why ScienceUs is on a mission to create an EU-wide network of interconnected citizen science projects where citizens actively contribute to addressing climate change challenges through science. ?? Are you a member of a citizen science initiative that focuses on the adaption of climate change? Join the ScienceUs project! Find out more on our website ?? https://lnkd.in/d4GPtTP7
