Many of us have faced, are facing, or will face circumstances beyond our control. This applies at a global, regional, national, state, community, business, organizational, family, and personal level. It can be related to our economy, companies, jobs, health or that of those we care about, weather, politics and so much more. We have all experienced this, of this am sure. I am also sure we will all will continue to experience this. That is guaranteed. What is not guaranteed is how you/we will choose to respond. That is a choice, that only you/we can make. We can abdicate agency. Play the victim (captive). Claim we are powerless, a captive imprisoned by our minds. Allow the circumstances to dictate our lives, vs. countering with choice. We know that usually does not end well. OR We can take agency. Be the captain. Control what we can. Influence where we can. Adapt where we can neither control or influence. We shape our own outcomes. This leads to a far better result. Think about what would have happened if: If those we remember on this Veterans Day had chosen not to serve or not serve well. If Martin Luther King said, "Oh, forget about it. We cannot do anything." Sully Sullenberger (US Air 1549, Miracle on the Hudson), played the victim. Eugene Kranz (Apollo 13) said the crew was doomed, nothing we can do here. Ed Bastian (CEO of Delta) reacted to Covid the way other legacy airlines did. We all know stories of those who chose to act or to influence action and made a difference for our world, our nation, our communities, our companies, our families, and ourselves. We have the power to shape our own futures. They won't all be perfect. They can all be better because of the choices we make individually and collectively. In challenging times, be the captain!
