I’ve been noticing a growing emphasis on Unified Namespace (UNS) as a proposed solution for data management in automation and manufacturing. The concept behind UNS is to centralize all data in a single repository, often using MQTT. However, this approach resembles the outdated "Data Lake" architecture, which aimed to consolidate all data into SQL databases—a strategy that ultimately fell short. A forward-thinking approach instead focuses on data virtualization in a distributed environment, enabling access to comprehensive, original, and accurate ground-truth data critical for AI and advanced analytics. In contrast, UNS is likely to result in incomplete, outdated, and unreliable data copies. I wrote about this more than a year ago when discussing a modern "Data Mesh" approach, which remains highly relevant in addressing the limitations of UNS.
