Last week, our President and CEO, Rodrick Miller, captivated the 2024 graduating class of Atlantis University with a deeply personal and profoundly inspiring commencement speech. While we are fortunate to witness his leadership daily, hearing him reflect on his journey and share the lessons that shaped his life, served as a powerful reminder of his unwavering vision, resilience, and commitment to building a life—and a legacy—that truly matters. Rodrick shared ten powerful lessons focused on building a meaningful life. He emphasized legacy, purpose, and the importance of finding what drives you to make a lasting impact on the world. Here are seven of those lessons: 1?? Put People First: See individuals for who they are, not just for the value they can provide. Foster authenticity in your relationships, listen more than you speak, and always remember that people are your greatest asset. 2?? Life Moves in Seasons: Every challenge and triumph is temporary. 3?? Be Present: Life happens in the now. 4?? Test Your Limits: Growth comes from challenges. You won't know what you're capable of until you push yourself. 5?? Everyone is the CEO of Their Job: Own your role, take responsibility for your life, and strive for excellence daily. Take pride in your work, no matter how small the task. 6?? Embrace Curiosity: Seek new experiences, perspectives, and ideas that challenge your beliefs. Travel extensively, engage with people who have different views, and read voraciously. 7?? Get to Know the World: Your story is part of something greater. It’s important to aim for the stars, so that we land on the tree tops. A “little Julia” story (check out my first LinkedIn post for reference): Like every other child, every time before going to sleep I would daydream about my future. I would make up all sorts of happy and funny events. However, there is one dream which always stood out to me. It is not a happy daydream. Not a daydream we would expect a 10 year old to have. It was a stressful dream…but, also exciting. In my dream, I was stuck with choosing between the two best universities in the world. Each one was fighting for me. I remember the following days, I kept debating and arguing with myself over which one I would pick, and why… You might wonder why I would choose to add another stressor in my life. Why I would choose to waste my time stressing about a fictional situation, when real challenges, those of reading, writing and staying in school, had not yet be conquered. In my 10 year old mind, I wanted that future so much I was willing to make it my current reality. Which motivated me. Made me creative in my thinking and strategy. No one could tell me I wasn’t good enough, because in my world I was being fought over by the best. In October 2023, I started my second degree at Imperial. Supported by incredible professors and peers, I have been exploring the field of Surgical Robotics. Back then, we were ranked 6th in the world. Yesterday, Imperial College London was ranked second in the world. The best two institutions might not be fighting over me… yet. But I am attending the second best university in the world. In some ways, I feel like I have accomplished the essence of that dream. I am proud to be part of and contributing to, the thriving Imperial community.

With 3 of the top 5 (and 4 of the top 10) universities in the world, the UK’s academic institutions remain exceptional and a critical strategic asset to drive innovation in healthcare, technology, sustainability and the broader economy. Imperial, Oxford, Cambridge, and UCL are also key incubators of the UK’s exceptional life sciences and tech start-ups.
