Hello everyone, On October 20th I will be running the Toronto Waterfront Marathon to raise funds for the WoodGreen organization. The WoodGreen organization provides financial literacy and empowerment services to young, at-risk individuals and low-income families across the city. Many of you share my passion for finance and economics. While this passion can allow us to understand the macroeconomic factors troubling everyday families, it can be easy to lose sight of the devastating impacts of poor money management. Approximately 50% of Canadians are living paycheque-to-paycheque, finding it increasingly difficult to manage expenses and navigate mounting personal debt. Furthermore, statistics show that those of us in low-income groups are up to ten times more likely to have an insufficient understanding of personal finance, often also lacking financial advisory resources. For these reasons, organizations like WoodGreen change lives. Small donations can fund resources that can provide youth and young families with learning opportunities they desperately need. I’ve noticed a worrying trend amongst funders who seem to have decided that Companies Ltd by Guarantee are no longer eligible for grants. Charities, CIO, CIC (without shares) and ‘not for profit’ organisations are usually described as being eligible in the guidance but 4 funders in the last few months have knocked us back at the enquiry stage because we’re not eligible…like they’re not even checking our mem and arts / constitution, it’s just a flat no. I remember when CIC’s were brought in back in the mid noughties and thinking that aside from the versions where share capital is available, that it was going to muddy the waters - it doesn’t offer anything that a standard company Ltd by guarantee offers… All these years later and CIC seems to have become synonymous with ‘social enterprise’ which while being irksome, wasn’t really an issue - but now this latest development feels like a shift is occuring. I know that Adrian Ashton has some thoughts on this topic - anyone else noticing this trend? Grant funding is in the ‘nice to have’ category for Our Creative Connection and the emphasis is always on income generation and trading but if this carries on I think we’ll have to change legal forms ??♂? #cic #theresmoretosocialenterprisethancic #whattheheck

Anton Kuchukhidze, the chairman of the Ukrainian Gambling Council, emphasizes that the main cause of gambling-related problems is illegal gambling facilities and online platforms: "It would be interesting to see how much the lottery operators, who operate without licenses and also illegally simulate gambling on their online platforms, have donated to the Armed Forces and humanitarian needs.
