?? A Radio Roundtable focusing on Gender-Based Violence was on broadcast local FM Asia Plus radio stations throughout Tajikistan through the Refugees Awareness for Peaceful Integration and Tolerance program. Ms. Nigina Mamadjonova, a psychologist and gender activist, and Ms. Hanifa Sultonova, the director of the Council of Women of Afghan Immigrants in Tajikistan, recently joined popular Asia Plus Radio host Subhon Jalilov. Together, their discussion raised awareness about violence encountered by Afghan refugees and Tajik women and discussed structures and mechanisms in Tajikistan for addressing such instances of violence. The radio guests discussed forms of GBV prevalent among Afghan refugees in Tajikistan, and stressed the importance of legal literacy to empower individuals to recognize and address domestic violence effectively. The speakers framed the conversation within the cultural context of Tajik society, where the upbringing and happiness of children are seen as central to familial success, by explaining that the prevalence of domestic violence contradicts these values and can severely affect children's well-being. HUMAN RIGHTS DAY & THE #ROHINGYA CRISIS Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10, marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. It is a day to reflect on the dignity, freedom, and equality that every individual deserves—principles that are tragically denied to the Rohingya people of Arakan #Myanmar. The Rohingya crisis is one of the most pressing human rights challenges in recent history. The Rohingya, a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority, have faced decades of persecution, systemic discrimination, and denial of citizenship in Myanmar. This escalated into widespread violence in 2017, when Myanmar's military launched a brutal crackdown, killing thousands, burning villages, and forcing over 700,000 Rohingya to flee to neighboring Bangladesh. Today, nearly one million Rohingya live in overcrowded refugee camps, such as Kutupalong in Cox’s Bazar, with limited access to basic rights, education, and livelihood opportunities. Those responsible for the atrocities committed against the Rohingya must face international legal consequences. #Support humanitarian efforts. Refugees need sustained aid for healthcare, education, and safety. The Rohingya deserve the right to return to Myanmar with full citizenship and protection under the law. The Rohingya crisis underscores the importance of global solidarity in upholding human rights for all, regardless of race, religion, or nationality.

Good news you didn't hear about in 2024 (68/86) The largest reduction of statelessness in recent history In October, the UNHCR announced that it has helped more than half a million displaced people acquire citizenship in the last decade, with at least 22 states taking action—including Kenya, which has granted nationality to minorities; Kyrgyzstan, the world’s first country to resolve all known cases of statelessness; and Sierra Leone, Madagascar, and Liberia, who all recently granted women the right to confer their nationality on their children. The big news however, came in November, when Thailand announced an accelerated pathway to end statelessness for 500,000 long-term residents and minority group members, and their children. Once implemented, this will be the single largest reduction of statelessness by any country worldwide.

Last month, as part of commemoration of International #MigrantsDay, IOM - UN Migration Ghana ran a series of trainings and sensitization for women Small-Scale Cross-Border Traders in Aflao, which included awareness raising on Protection from Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (PSEAH) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV). As part of the awareness-raising session, the women received toll-free branded items including t-shirts, patio umbrellas, torch lights, water bottles, tote bags, mugs, wrist bands, aprons, and head scarfs. The 24-hour toll free number provides a safe space for the women to seek support regarding mental health and GBV. These activities were made possible through the IOM Development Fund project “Empowering Women in Small-Scale Cross-Border Trade (SSCBT) Between Benin, Ghana and Togo”. ?? Gendered Disinformation: A Tool of Harmful Narratives ?? Gendered disinformation exploits stereotypes and biases to attack individuals based on their gender, often to serve political, social, or economic agendas. ?? This issue has taken a troubling turn during the Ukraine-Russia war. Thousands of Ukrainian women, seeking safety in neighboring EU countries, have faced targeted campaigns aimed at spreading harmful narratives and furthering division. ?? Addressing this challenge requires collective action to expose and counter gender-based disinformation. Together, we can advocate for informed societies and protect those most vulnerable to these tactics. #GenderedDisinformation #UkraineRussiaWar #DigitalResilience #InformedSociety

UNHCR is launching a Global Alliance to End Statelessness ?? https://lnkd.in/dasezRnC. Who are #stateless people? Why does #UNHCR care? And, what do we do about it? Read on. ?? More than 4 million people in the world lack a nationality, due to specific circumstances or by design. Stateless people may be denied access to education and legal work. Statelessness often overlaps with discrimination of minorities, and leads to exploitation and abuse. ?? The Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms that “everyone has the right to a nationality”. The 1954 Convention related to the Status of Stateless Persons https://lnkd.in/d3cNwSVC helps ensure stateless people can live in security and dignity until their situation is resolved. The 1964 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness https://lnkd.in/d-YP3d4j aims to prevent and reduce statelessness. The General Assembly of the United Nations has mandated #UNHCR as the international advocate for the rights of stateless persons, according to these international instruments. ? ?? In the field, we help stateless persons by: ? ?? Identifying communities and problems, and intervening through operations or advocacy, ?? Advocating for prevention mechanisms, such as inclusive birth registry, ?? Encouraging Governments to reduce statelessness through e.g. legal change, ?? Advocating for respect of international law pertaining to statelessness. ?? At the global level, we launched in 2014 the #Ibelong campaign, which has helped more than 500,000 persons obtaining a nationality https://lnkd.in/d76v5hQB ?? A memory: While working in the Bekaa valley, in #Lebanon, with Syrian #refugees, in 2018, we identified extremely vulnerable communities of Dom people living among the refugees. The Dom people live in the Middle East and speak their own language, related to Romani. A 1m USD grant from our Headquarters helped us start a child protection programme, which continues to this day. You can get more info on stateless people and our work with them here: ?? https://lnkd.in/dybgsysK Stateless people seeking help can use this website?? https://lnkd.in/d8Reyq5W
