Check out this progress picture of Gray’s restored University of Kentucky College of Design building. Look at those stairs!
I'm incredibly excited about the University of Kentucky College of Design's new chapter in the Gray Design Building at the University of Kentucky. This is a landmark project for our campus and community, leveraging historic preservation to enhance contemporary Design education. Thanks to generous support from Gray and the work of Studio Gang, K. Norman Berry Associates Architects PLLC, John Carman Carman Landscape Architecture, CMTA, Inc. and Turner Construction Company we're transforming a century-old tobacco warehouse into a vibrant learning environment. This move not only signals our growth but our commitment to innovative, cross-disciplinary learning in a beautifully adaptive space. Here's to new beginnings in a building that embodies our future. #GrayDesignBuilding

What is better than one student activities complex? Two student activities complexes! ? The Socorro ISD Student Activities Complex II will allow the six schools within the school district more flexibility in scheduling sporting events and special events, including concerts, movies, festivals, and banquets. The facility will also support fine arts, career and technology programs, and administration. ? In collaboration with HKS, Inc., Parkhill served as associate architect for the multi-level District Building on the south end. The terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows in the banquet hall offer premium stadium views. ? Parkhill also provided civil and landscape architectural design which artfully celebrates the local landscape aesthetic by integrating the 6500-seat stadium into the topography with terraces behind the end zones, accessibility guided by the landscape, and stadium fencing which blends into the facility. The field’s design allows for competition-level play including a separate field events zone. Site development unifies the site creating efficient event parking, safe pedestrian and traffic circulation, and proper drainage improvements. ? City of Socorro, Texas Socorro ISD HKS, Inc. They say that ‘A good deed never goes unpunished.’ It’s mad to think that Sir Christopher Wren (1632 — 1723), designer of the beautiful St Paul’s Cathedral, is also partly the reason behind some of London’s more recent carbuncles, such as the Walkie Talkie and the Cheesegrater… These behemoths aren’t just architectural folly. It’s all down to ‘St Paul’s Heights’, a statute that protects the viewing corridors of the Cathedral. It states that the view of the dome cannot be obscured from Primrose Hill, Greenwich Park or Richmond Park, where there’s a special hole cut in a hedge to preserve the view. In all, there are eight protected views that crisscross the capital. So, the Walkie Talkie, all curved up in its top-heavy-car-incinerating-sun-reflective-shape, is that way to allow for the corridor view, and equally, the steep incline and leaning back to the North of the Cheesegrater owes its shape to the same reason. It’s remarkable how what we create now can echo through the centuries. This underscores the immense power of design and its ability to shape a future that is yet unknown. ‘St Paul’s Heights’ was ostensibly aiming to do a good deed, but it has had unexpected and, some might say, negative results. I’m sure Wren would be flattered by the statute, but I wonder what he’d think of the architectural anomalies it helped create. #stpaulsheights #designforthefuture #gooddeeds

If I can add a bit to this stellar post from Thriven Design it would be to say that it’s easy to lose sight of the complexity of a building, both inside and out, when you are focused on your firm’s specific contribution (in this case, CCI provided the terra cotta). But terra cotta is only about 20% of the exterior envelope.?The remainder is metal, glass, and masonry. ?Now that the project is complete and occupied we can take another look and examine the facade in its totality. The base of the building is a mix of different masonry materials: granite and limestone; above that is a corrugated single skin metal, with high relief metal window enclosures and vertical ACM window panels. The building entry is a blond wood slats (or vinyl coated corrugated metal) with silver ACM trim. The overall effect is one that is understated but has variety and visual interest from every viewpoint.? How can we reshape our public spaces to nurture our cities and create healthy, sustainable and resilient places to live? Landscape Architects Churchman Thornhill Finch led the Shape My City students in a rethinking of Bristol's harbourside Amphitheatre. The session started with studying the site - looking at both the macro and micro scale - and then students reimagined the space through 3d sketches in collage and modelling. The students interrogated how we can create places to sit and spend time, to move through and to socialise, and how public spaces can give back to people of all ages and to nature. Proposals included water features, art work and play spaces, as well as plentiful planting ?? Consideration was given to permanent and temporary uses, how the space evolves through different times of day and year, and allowing people to walk, sit, cycle and skate through the same area in harmony with one another. This is the eighth session in the 2023-24 Shape My City programme. Applications for the 2024-25 programme are now open. Distinctive Pyramid Skylight Project Crystal Structures designed and installed an iconic 22' x 22' pyramid-shaped skylight for The Promise Land Baptist Church in Louisville, KY. Soaring 12 feet above the roofline and topped with a cross, the daylighting solution puts a symbolic cap on the church. The project floods the sanctuary below with natural light in a way that connects congregants to the divine. While the church itself was originally built around 2005 by Abel Construction, the custom skylight by Crystal Structures remains a defining architectural feature. Though not a new installment, the skylight demonstrates how thoughtful design, engineering, and strategic placement of daylighting solutions can transform indoor spaces. In this case, enhancing the setting for communities to gather and fulfill their higher purpose. https://lnkd.in/g6cMBCxt

"62% of UK waste comes from construction - mindlessly tearing down and replacing good solid buildings like Smallbrook." #DontWasteBuildings It's a shocking statistic from the take-make-waste approach of most of the property development industry. And that's before we understand the huge damage to the climate, currently tottering on the edge of an unstoppable slide into oblivion, that's endangering our lives today. Most policy makers in the UK are lagging horribly behind the curve when it comes to the climate damage caused by new build development. Some, like The Labour Party led Westminster City Council are leading the way. "Our new retrofit-first policy will prioritise the retrofit and refurbishment of existing buildings to meet future needs over unnecessary demolition and redevelopment, reducing the impact of development on climate change." Birmingham City Council can make a political choice to get on to the right side of history. Fighting in court to promote climate destruction by an offshore owned entity isn't a good look today, never mind tomorrow.
Ringway Reimagined THANK YOU Birmingham Dispatch & BBC for today's top story: "Over the last few months, the Ringway Centre has captured national and celebrity attention. With its demolition recently confirmed by the city’s planning committee - this hasn’t deterred a legal challenge. And now the most talented architectural students are getting in on the act: imagining alternative uses for the building, including as community spaces and exercise hubs. "Another way Ringway:?Architecture students have come up with different ways the Ringway centre could be repurposed, as an arts or cultural hub. With the James Robert-designed brutalist building, students from Birmingham School of Architecture and Design have been looking at different ways to rework the building, with gardens, food courts and playgrounds included.?Check out their ideas here - BBC link below. As our planet grows warmer, the responsibility to design for shade becomes increasingly critical. At CannonDesign, we believe building owners, civic leaders and designers must collaborate to increase shade cover through creative approaches. Projects like our Kirkland Ranch Academy of Innovation, designed in partnership with Hepner Architects, is just north of Tampa, Florida. The project employs a minimum 2:1 ratio for shading full glazed walls. All other windows are covered with a perforated metal panel to provide shading and safety to the exterior. Simple things add! We can provide comfort, energy savings, and quality of life. These shaded spaces aren’t just performing - they become social centers, places to get away, or meet with friends. Discover how we can work together to create cooler, more comfortable environments for our communities: https://lnkd.in/gtf67FhR
