The "Planning, Design, and Construction Aspects of Pre-Engineered Steel Buildings" refresher course conducted by IAStructE HQ was a fantastic experience. Overall, it was a fascinating series of lectures in which the presenters covered a wide range of technical topics such as planning, structural analysis, design, codes, material, connections, anchor bolts, fabrication, transportation, and erection of PEB steel buildings, as well as providing a thorough understanding of PEB structure principles. I must point out that pre-engineered buildings are all about rethinking classic steel structure designs to suit the present world's efficiency and sustainability demands.

The Importance of Post-Tensioning in Reducing Steel usage and Structural Weight. Post-tensioning is a simple yet a highly effective technique that plays a significant role in modern construction. It allows us to minimize the amount of steel reinforcement used in a structure, there by reducing its overall weight. This, in turn, decreases the size of the foundations required to support the structure. The concept of post-tensioning is straightforward: cables are placed in a direction opposite to the moment (bending force) within the structural element. After the concrete is poured, the cables are tensioned. Once the cables are tensioned and anchored, compressive forces are introduced into the structural element. These compressive forces counteract the tensile forces caused by live and dead loads acting on the element. As a result, the overall bending moments are significantly reduced, enabling us to use a much smaller quantity of steel compared to a design without post-tensioning cables.
