Sunday Book Review 3 The Kill Chain - Defending America in the Future of High-Tech Warfare || Christian Brose ? Not strictly a business book! It was nominated as the Commandant’ Choice, in the list of suggested professional reading for all US Marines and it does not disappoint especially if the world of defence interests you! The author is a former senior policy advisor to US Senator John McCain and uses his experience as the youngest Staff Director of the Senate Armed Services Committee in history and a long-time defence insider to lay out exactly how the American Military has fallen behind peers like China in the race to modernise the force in an age of high-technology and interconnectivity. The “Kill Chain” is a process that occurs on the battlefield whenever militaries compete and consists of 3 steps – gaining an understanding of what is happening, making a decision of what do to and finally taking action. ? America’s defence establishment consist of the Iron Triangle of the Department of Defense, Congress and the Industry which is now no more fit for purpose having fallen way behind more innovative enemies like China thanks to its obsessions with building, buying and maintaining platforms (aircraft squadrons, amphibious vehicles, tanks) rather than kill chains thus losing out on inter-operatability between platforms and high technology. ? Today the US military lacks technology that even ordinary US homemakers use every day – cloud computing, AI, robots, quantum technology, biotechnology, ML and the IoT. The US military is today built around power projections such as aircraft carriers and forward bases while China has focused on precision kill chains to counter the larger US force. ? The reason for this decline in the US military readiness for future battles is not due to a lack of money, or intent or talent, or access to technology but due to US's absolute global military dominance in the past 2 decades which meant that in the absence of war and a credible large threat, there was no need to innovate. Added to this is the focus on the war on terror rather than “big power competition” which is what dominated the Cold War Era. The book spends a lot of time laying out the problem but is thin on solutions. ? The author talks about running competitions for military acquisitions between suppliers, working with allies like NATO and Japan, more investment in the start-up world, a revamp of the incentive and political structure that drives hardware procurement and hard choices when it comes to acquisitions. ? Inherently its amazing how the US thinks that it deserves to dominate the world, project military power to get its way and cannot even fathom that anybody else could be stronger. ? The book has cool stuff like the difference between ballistic, cruise and hypersonic missiles, the advent of aircraft carriers as force multipliers for the Navy and the concept the “Assassin’s Mace” as the China military strategy!?

AeroVironment, a U.S. defense contractor, saw its stock surge by 7.6% to $196.63 in early trading, buoyed by what is described as a "rare move" from the U.S. Army. This increase comes as part of a larger upward trend, with AeroVironment's shares up approximately 56% year to date. The recent boost in stock value follows a late August announcement that the company had secured a significant $990 million, five-year contract with the U.S. Army for its Switchblade loitering munitions system—a guided bomb that can loiter in the air while an operator targets. This contract is particularly impactful given AeroVironment's size, equating to around $50 million in revenue per quarter. For context, Wall Street analysts expect the company to report $177 million in sales for the quarter ending in October, making the Army contract a substantial addition to their revenue stream. However, despite this positive development, AeroVironment disclosed in mid-September that the award is being contested by other suppliers, a common occurrence in defense contracting. The protest introduces some uncertainty, but it has not yet dampened investor enthusiasm. The stock's significant rise highlights the importance of the contract and suggests that investors are optimistic about AeroVironment's prospects, even as the protest process unfolds. This situation underscores the volatile nature of defense contracting, where large contracts can significantly impact smaller companies, both positively and negatively, depending on the outcome of protests and other competitive dynamics.
