Our Director, Shannon Ross, MSP will be joining Word Force and Formerly Incarcerated College Graduates Network for a roundtable IG Live conversation on April 1st with Terrell A. Blount, MPA (FICGN), and Stacy Burnett, MBA (ITHAKA S+R), moderated by Nikesha Williams (Word Force), to reimagine what a true month of uplifting current and formerly incarcerated people should be. Since its inception, Second Chance Month has been billed as a way to celebrate and uplift formerly incarcerated people. To call anything a chance tells us that we have finite opportunities to grow and learn as human beings. But we know that the more we pour into people, resources, and support, the more opportunities they have to grow. We should be thinking about that in an expansive way rather than a limiting one.

It’s one thing to say, “You now have a second chance.” It’s another thing to say, “You now have a second chance, and here are people who can guide you as you take clear steps to make the most of it.” Check out what our neighbors in Washington State are doing to lay a path toward successful reentry and reintegration for those in their community. #SecondChanceMonth #communitymatters #OneHeartProject https://lnkd.in/gUCYZhyA

In 2024, NorthallertonBID will build upon the successes of the previous year. Representing over 220 businesses in Northallerton, it is our responsibility to ensure that all their needs are met. As business practices continue to evolve, we constantly monitor consumer habits, footfall, dwell time, and vacancy rates to ensure that Northallerton remains a prosperous place to work and build a business. The BID will organize, host, and execute the following events and services this year: - Yearly "What's on" guide to keep people informed about important dates - Seasonal trails for the public - Job fairs - Three large-scale events - Monthly music events - Coach party offerings - Business cardboard recycling scheme - Social media spotlights on Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram - Monthly competitions for the public to enter hosted by BID businesses - Funding of floral displays around Northallerton - Cleaning gum off the High Street - First Aid courses to ensure safety for businesses and the public. I wanted to take a break from the job search activities and posts to highlight a friend of mine. Jason Grayer has created an awesome site for those in the Greensboro, NC area (often referred to as the "Triad") to help support families with special needs. So not only runs a gym, called We Rock the Spectrum, but he has now has developed a site that can save you valuable time when looking for resources. Check out www.thegiftresource.com and make it easy to find everything you need in one place. If you're in the Triad or just want to support a great thing. #findresources #autismresources #greathumanbeing

Recovery focused is something I greatly support when professionals try to understand the real nature of what led service users to get unwell in the first place and recognise a lot of them experienced inadequate support in the community due to the systematic failures prevailing throughout the existing services which requires a lot of improvement to be made as the main causes negatively affecting of people’s mental health rather than always blaming service users for becoming unwell and for instances causing offences in which they wouldn’t have done it if they are in their right state of mind. In other words this could have been prevented if the root causes of their problems could have been addressed at early stages and a lot attention is being paid how to solve such problems before it escalated to a total mental breakdown that lead a lot of service users end up in hospital and remain hostage of their terrible past where they are constantly interrogated of their past in hospitals which I believe is squeezing a wound and expecting a better result which is an approach far from recovery focused language and causing to remain hostage for their terrible past for the rest of their lives and stay hopeless forever!

Here is a recent excerpt from The Exchange Magazine we are recommending for colleagues and friends working with children and families. "....... We will need a collective hero in order to rise above the challenges we face as a society and as a field. Still, the individual work we do matters greatly for community progress. Each of us brings something unique that can fuel a larger effort or movement. The stories of our lives are our gift to the world. While we are the main characters of our lives, we are also supporting characters in the stories of the children, peers, and communities we give our care. Both individual and collective courage can and should coexist to create harmony between self-preservation and community care. Your story matters. You can uplift, encourage, and ignite the fire in others when you share experiences from your work and life. When we encounter a challenging work situation, confront our limited thinking, or succeed in a goal that we once thought impossible, we reveal vital personal values, gather evidence to support our self-confidence and learn valuable lessons. These jewels can light the way for others to walk a similar path and reach higher than they thought possible." https://lnkd.in/diSdat4i
