It seems that a significant proportion of my LinkedIn contacts from the #naturalresources sector have made it over to #Riyadh for the 4th edition of the #FutureMineralForum. Lucky you; I went last year and it was super impressive to see the difference between that event, and the first mining event in Jeddah in 2008. ? FMF seems destined to remain a major event in the #mining diary, and it's great to see the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia grabbing the sector by the scruff of the neck and dragging it kicking and screaming into the 21st Century... or is it? ? Major deals, great announcements, and more bling than you shake on a stick, but does this truly reflect the woeful state of the market and the huge stresses being put upon companies due to the lack of #equity funding and the growing collateral losses in the media against the forces of NIMBY’ism and BANANA’ism. Let’s face it, despite the platitudes and applause from our politicians, it remains ever harder to explore, let alone then build and produce. Unless of course you have a #lithium project, in which they’ve not yet cottoned on ?? ? Of course, we have #INDABA following very soon – always a favourite, but it’s hard to keep a straight face when you see the selfies with Table Mountain and glasses of chilled Chenin Blanc – hard work? I think not. ? And then #PDAC, which in my view remains the best of the big events, specifically because it’s so accessible (￡ vs ￡￡￡￡￡￡￡); you don’t have to try and bluff a gatekeeper to avoid the exorbitant fees (London anyone?);?and offers such a broad depth and breadth of content, across the financial, technical, #social and #environmental spectrum. ? Meanwhile, those of us sat on the rigs and the in the #coreshed will keep pressing on. Don’t forget us when you’re tucking into that evening canape!

Saudi Arabia is moving away from being a procurer, to becoming a producer. Through its Global Supply Chain Resilience Initiative (GCSRI) by the National Investment Strategy, the Kingdom is supporting the growth of some of its key sectors, and earning its place in global supply chains. By November last year, Saudi Arabia had attracted investments of $1 billion in mining, over $160 billion in investments in the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources’ markets, and over $260 million in mineral wealth, which is almost threefold the growth when compared to previous figures. The country is now set to develop 100 new investment opportunities, which include projects in green energy and AI. For businesses here, this is an incredible opportunity, because it gives us the chance to build resilient supply chains that rely on localised manufacturing and supply. Procurement teams therefore have a critical role to play in supporting and achieving this ambition, while also helping their organisations benefit from it, by: Identifying the key sectors that are in focus, Prioritising local supplier relationships and nearshoring, Identifying opportunities for strategic supplier relationships, And investing in supplier development and product innovation. If Dangote Refinery were built in the Arab world, e.g Dubai, the entire world would have known about this great feat. They would have used as a singular project to showcase the excellence and infrastructural wonders of Dubai. They would have created significant buzz, running numerous documentaries from Al Jazeera to BBC and CNN, all highlighting Dubai as the premier investment hub for business owners. YouTube would have been flooded with videos, tours, and visits. With over 7 billion people on Earth, from Brazil to China, New York to South Africa, Rus sia to Australia, the world would have seen Dubai in a different light, thereby enhancing positive investor brand equity for the city. Investors would have more faith in Dubai’s economy, reasoning that if an $18.5 billion-plus industrial project like the largest single-train refinery in the world can be built there, theirs can too. But here we are. Despite such a monumental project, it remains known only to a few. Ask in Brazil about the largest single-train refinery in the world, and most would likely mention Saudi Arabia. In China, inquire about the refinery with the world's largest crude distillation equipment, and many might mistakenly cite a So viet Union state. It was great to be on Asharq Business ?????? ????? today discussing reasons why the Saudi equity market (TASI) stabilized above the 12k level.
