People with profound autism are often excluded from clinical research because of the severe impairments they experience. Alongside broader autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research, there's a critical need for focused studies on profound autism to address its unique complexities. This specialized research will help clinicians create appropriate treatment plans, improving access to healthcare, education, and social services. Spending the week in fabulous Buenos Aires at the #ACBS World Conference with the only two neurodiversity-focused workshops on the conference agenda: (1) "Helping neurodivergent clients unmask to find self-acceptance, self-compassion, and a cohesive sense of identity" with the incredible Dr Alison Stapleton in which we will share Alison's cutting edge research and explore how the coherence and sense of identity provided by an Autism diagnosis supports unmasking and improved wellbeing. (2) "Understanding the Autistic "Spiky Profile" as a Foundation for Effective and Affirming ACT and CFT" in which I explore how differences in information processing in Autistic people lead to profound differences in life experiences and outcomes - and understanding this is essential for effective therapy. Why the ducks? IYKYK ;) #contextualscience

Effectively identifying indices of client happiness and unhappiness for clients who have substantial communication difficulties has several potential clinical benefits. One of them is that indices and happiness/unhappiness may signal the presence of a setting event that could affect other behavior/environment interactions. My student, Jacquie Wilson, conducted a project looking at just that. She conducted a clinical case study to assess the relation between indices of happiness/unhappiness and challenging behavior with a client diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. I think the results were fascinating and provide considerations for clinicians and researchers involved with assessing and treating challenging behavior. If you are interested, you can check out the study here:?https://rdcu.be/dU020.

This study is significant, particularly as it represents the foundational aspect of any therapeutic service. Who would seek assistance from someone who does not show genuine interest in their concerns? As human beings, we forge connections through shared interests and mutual engagement, a phenomenon often referred to as rapport. We experience this naturally in everyday situations, such as in a grocery store. For instance, when two individuals reach for the same can of ravioli and one remarks, "Oh, I apologize! My child ONLY eats XYZ," the typical response is often one that resonates with their shared experience. In my experience within this field, I have frequently observed a deficiency in fostering relationships, attributed to various factors. However, cultivating such connections should be one of the most fundamental principles we embrace, particularly when we choose to work with a vulnerable populations. This study is commendable, as it underscores a principle that should be apparent when engaging with challenging clients. The objective of skill acquisition and the reduction of maladaptive behaviors lies in identifying a "shared" interest. It is essential to invest time in understanding the client and interacting with them in the most natural and humane manner possible. By doing so, we empower them to regain control over their lives moving forward. This is why when I trained RBTs and others working with these kids/adults I stressed the importance of taking your time connecting to understand the behaviors of concern and the behaviors that we want to improve. That does not happen within the first or even second session with these clients yet clinic after clinic I worked at was pushing "work work work!" Resulting in an increase in maladaptive behaviors more often than not putting themselves and others in danger. Great article!

Join us for the second webinar of our Autism Assessment Webinar Series on Thursday, October 3. Dr. Somer Bishop of University of California San Francisco will discuss the factors that led to the development of standardized diagnostic instruments for ASD, and identify the potential advantages, as well as misuses, of standardized diagnostic tools in clinical and research settings. Dr. Bishop will also share how individual and contextual factors may affect diagnostic validity of certain tools and what strategies to employ instead. Time to get political! Very few people know about DLD and that includes politicians. If you think politicians in your country need to know about DLD then write them a letter. We've heard of positive responses from people in power from Ireland to Brazil, and all because a parent or someone with DLD has written them a letter. Write today! Tell them about DLD, your experiences and then one thing they can do to make things a little better for you and others with DLD. If you are a parent of a child with DLD, include an artwork by your child too. It makes it more meaningful. #DLDday is Friday October 18th. The theme is 'Speak up for DLD' as we want more people to know about DLD. Join us to amplify the voices of this hidden need. NOTE: DLD stands for Developmental Language Disorder. It is a difficulty with understanding and using spoken words and sentences. It has a neurodevelopmental basis, so people are born with it and don't 'just grow out of it', and it is not caused by their parents not talking to them. It impacts on learning, literacy, relationships and employment. Every person with DLD is different. Awareness is fundamental as with identification and support, people with DLD can thrive and lead the lives they want to. Join us to build a better word for all with DLD and their families. radld.org

The Australian Capital Territory is creating a Neurodiversity Strategy and Office for Neurodiversity and I want us to keep these things in mind. Neurodiversity isn’t synonymous with Autism. Neurodiversity isn’t synonymous with neurodevelopmental conditions. Neurodivergent doesn’t mean Autism. Neurodivergent doesn’t mean neurodevelopmental conditions. If a neurodiversity strategy is only for neurodevelopmental conditions, it isn’t a neurodiversity strategy, it’s a neurodevelopmental strategy. If an office for neurodiversity’s sole focus is on neurodevelopmental conditions, it isn’t an office for neurodiversity, it’s an office for neurodevelopmental conditions. I really hope the ACT government can reflect on how calling it the Neurodiversity Strategy and Office for Neurodiversity is misleading to the general public learning about these terms as well as neurodivergent people who will think this is a strategy for them only to be excluded as they discover it isn’t for them.
