Will carbon capture technology be economically viable? Carbon capture technology has been around for decades, but it has not yet been widely adopted due to its high cost. However, there is a growing belief that carbon capture technology will become more economically viable in the coming years, as the cost of renewable energy continues to fall and the price of carbon emissions rises. If CCS becomes more economically viable, it could play a major role in helping to mitigate climate change. CCS can be used to capture carbon dioxide emissions from power plants, industrial facilities, and other sources. How can #climate reporting drive electrification? The upcoming disclosure requirements for #carbonemissions will support the electrification in high-emitting industries and thereby drive global #electricity demand. In 2025, the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD) requires companies to report Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and, in 2026, the SEC requires US companies to report Scope 1 and 2 emissions. As companies try to cut these annually reported carbon emissions to show their progress towards reaching their self-imposed net zero emissions targets, these companies will increasingly switch to green electricity as a means to reduce their carbon footprint in their own operations (Scope 1), for their purchased power consumption (Scope 2) and for their own products (Scope 3). This electrification of the economy will be necessary to reach net zero emissions by 2050 and, according to the InternationalEnergyAgency IEA, could lead to an almost tripling of global electricity consumption over the next 25 years in what the IEA calls the “Age of Electricity”.?#energy
