Gabe Arnold Thanks for the serious scientific and engineering outlook balanced with what actually happens/reality approach -- this helpful targeted research and your additional planned work. The issue of ozone generation (potential for farUV222) has to be evaluated and your new work will go a long way toward that. The key difference is whether you focus on hazard -- that theoretic danger that could occur or risk -- the likihood of actual danager. The risk approach is often a higher risk approach(:)) because the perfect storm-- and many imperfect storms -- can escape our risk calculations but happen anyway! Your work is key to helping assess the hazard/risk equation.
A new article is out in LEDs Magazine on our research into effectiveness and energy use of measures to achieve ASHRAE Standard 241 and CDC guidelines. This article focuses on the opportunity provided by germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) air treatment. One key finding: In the studied office building, GUV when combined with ASHRAE 62.1 ventilation can achieve CDC recommended 5 equivalent air changes (eACH) using 75-80% less energy than HVAC-only approaches. Further, the office building HVAC system by itself was not capable to achieve the CDC recommendation without upgrading or replacing the system. Adding GUV can help buildings energy efficiently achieve these new recommendations without requiring HVAC system upgrades or replacements. Thanks to my colleague Cary Faulkner for leading this work. We've come a long way. In the early days of the pandemic, public health officials were wrong about how covid was transmitted, which meant time money and effort were wasted on chemical surface disinfection, social distancing, plexiglass dividers, etc. Once they realized that covid--like colds, flu, strep, and many other diseases--is actually spread by airborne aerosols, in a rush to just do something, public health officials gave us one-size-fits all guidance on how many air changes are needed to sufficiently dilute the number of aerosols in indoor air to prevent infection. Now we have ASHRAE 241 which considers the size, occupancy, and activity in a space and recommends a tested particle measurement technology to determine how well the HVAC system is working to reach the CDC guidelines for aerosol dilution. As a result, we can now measure rooms within a building and pinpoint where ventilation needs to be increased, and where it can be decreased. We have found that about 75% of buildings are over ventilating, wasting energy and money. Other spaces, particularly in schools where students are highly concentrated, are not providing enough fresh air and are putting students and teachers at risk. We use the specific technology recommended by ASHRAE 241 to accurately measure how you are doing vs. the 241 standard. You may be able to save money--up to 30%--on your HVAC spend. Please contact us if you would like to learn more. If you are not meeting the new healthy indoor air standard, we can tell you what you need to do to achieve proper ventilation and dilution. And if you have special requirements, we can recommend the best way to go beyond dilution in order to actually destroy airborne pathogens using shielded upper room UVGI. #indoorairquality #IAQ #energyefficiency #HVACoptimization

The Power of Ventilation – Tips for Energy-Efficient System Design | October 15 & 16 The seminar focuses on the basic requirements of ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2022, covering its scope, application, and multiple compliance paths, including the ventilation rate procedure, indoor air quality procedure, and natural ventilation procedure. Topics include crucial aspects such as minimum requirements for cleaning outdoor air, designing HVAC systems, determining ventilation rate quantities, and effective commissioning, as well as proper operations and maintenance practices. The seminar explores constant volume and variable air volume (VAV) recirculating systems for both single-zone and multiple-zone spaces. Fundamental insights into designing Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems (DOAS) ventilation and comparing energy usage among various ventilation system types, guiding you in making informed and environmentally responsible choices are covered.
