The City of Los Angeles, in its ongoing quest to (apparently) make the planning approval process ever more complicated and costly, has a new Environmental Justice initiative. The goals of initiatives such as this one may be laudable. However, arguably the best way to address environmental justice is to improve housing affordability in less polluted parts of the City. Is potentially adding even more hoops to the process the best approach? What are your thoughts? https://lnkd.in/g4tNZrt6 #cityoflosangeles #cityofla #lacityplanning #environmentaljustice #housingaffordability #landuseplanning

?? Funding opportunity for frontline communities doing environmental justice work in Middle Tennessee! I’m proud to serve on the Dan and Margaret Maddox Fund's Environmental Justice Advisory Board, where I’ve had the opportunity to learn a lot about how we can make grantmaking processes more equitable for frontline communities. This fall, we’re offering grants of up to $30,000 in three impactful areas: ?? Access to Green Space: Ensuring marginalized communities have equitable access to parks and natural areas through innovative outdoor teaching and conservation efforts. ?? Climate Justice: Supporting communities affected by climate change with initiatives that enhance resiliency, facilitate a just transition to renewable energy, and tackle challenges like flooding and invasive species. ?? Food Justice: Addressing agricultural land loss and advocating for marginalized communities to gain access to land and food resources. It’s crucial to recognize that funding can often serve as a barrier for frontline communities seeking to implement bold and innovative solutions to the environmental and social problems we face. This is a fantastic opportunity for those working in these areas to apply for flexible funding. LOI's are due November 4th. Many residents in the Mid-Atlantic region (including the NY metro area) would say they have driven past an abandoned property or old gas station in need of environmental remediation/cleanup. Since 2020, the Biden Administration and NJ Governor Murphy have signed legislation and earmarked funding to address environmental issues. Many concerns are disproportionately present in EJ communities - primarily those populated by those at or below the poverty line, minorities, and non-English speakers. According to the NEW JERSEY DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION's Environmental Justice (EJ) Map (https://lnkd.in/eqQ7qvJd) all of the state’s 21 counties contain at least one EJ or Overburdened Community (OBC). ?? Submitting a winning grant proposal requires understanding the funding goals and selection criteria. Most funders provide detailed application guidelines, and many offer on-line informational meetings, training sessions and pre-submittal reviews. In fact, according to last week’s Environmental Protection Network’s e-newsletter and website, the EPA announced that Community Change Grants (https://lnkd.in/g-Q9t_U5) applicants who submit by August 1st can get feedback and resubmit by the November 21st deadline. ??? Developing a strong proposal with your project’s objectives and methodology is essential. An impactful statement of need, including a detailed project description with well-defined goals, is also key. Budgets must be justified and include an evaluation plan to demonstrate how success will be measured. The project team’s proposed partnerships, expertise and experience are important factors to the decision makers. ?? Following submission, it is helpful to follow up and seek feedback. Building relationships with grant officers can pave the way for the future, and aligning with funders’ goals and demonstrating community involvement can significantly boost success rates. Forging solid partnerships with all stakeholders throughout the process also helps to affect real change in EJ communities. ? ?? At Urban Verde, we subscribe to funders’ e-newsletters, track their live and virtual informational events in a calendar, and attend - if applicable. We have found success in responding to specific criteria of each funding request with a thorough understanding of the background and intent of the funding agency’s decision makers. In fact, we recently helped a NJ municipality receive three sources of funding for a coastal restoration and climate resilience project which will include developing recreational and educational facilities. ?? If you have identified a remediation/cleanup project in an EJ community, please contact us or leave a comment below. We partner with community organizations, municipalities, institutions, foundations, or other non-profits seeking expertise in grant writing and environmental remediation for EJ communities. #grantwriting #EJ

How are you progressing towards Environmental Justice in your work and research? Environmental Justice is an essential consideration for all sectors of our society. It is a starting point to build a future where all people have access to clean water, clean air, safe living environments, and access to the benefits of society. This means equal protections from hazards and wastes for all people, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or other imposed and historical power imbalances. The Whitehouse recently released the Environmental Justice Science, Data and Research Plan, with fours themes: Enhancing meaningful involvement and engagement of the public Fortifying just treatment, equitable access, and protection from environmental injustice Strengthening work and partnership with non-federal entities Institutionalizing environmental justice I am working my way through the 50-page document which contains many recommendations that inspire and align with my work. One example is from institutionalizing EJ: "...expanding staff training to include community engagement strategies and building multidisciplinary teams with expertise (including expertise gained through lived experiences) can help agencies better ask and answer questions relevant to advancing environmental justice." Does your work fit into these themes or outside of them? How does this plan and the concept of EJ in general make you feel?
