And get this – TRAC, they call it "Moneyball" for venture capital, focuses on identifying startups likely to fail rather than succeed. Out of 53 deals, it has registered zero losses. Mind-blowing. Two Darwin portfolios named in Business Insider's "85 most promising startups of 2024" Business Insider asked top venture capitalists to nominate the "Most promising US startups of 2024," resulting in a list of 85 American startups. Scanning the list, two points are worth mentioning: 1. (small surprise): Darwin, which primarily invests in Asia, surprisingly has two portfolio companies on the list! Gamma and Jaan Health. Even though we already knew these two companies were performing exceptionally well, it's still great to see them recognized by North American investors. 2. (no surprise at all): This list is truly dominated by AI. Both Gamma and Jaan Health are also using AI to solve pain points in different verticals: Gamma uses AI to help over 20 million users create compelling presentations, websites, and documents; Jaan Health, on the other hand, uses AI to transform how US clinics manage the chronic conditions of hundreds of thousands of patients. Shoutout to Harpoon Ventures portfolio companies Solugen, Firestorm and Sema4.ai for making Business Insider's Most Promising Startups list (according to Venture Capitalists). Solugen uses biotechnology to make chemicals in an environmentally friendly way. The Houston-based startup launched in 2016 and has developed a manufacturing platform dubbed Bioforge. That platform uses bioengineered enzymes and metal catalysts to convert sugars into chemicals typically made from fossil fuels like petroleum and natural gas. Firestorm is part of?San Diego's booming defense tech ecosystem, building modular, 3D-printed drones that can operate autonomously and perform predetermined missions on the battlefield. Through its novel edge-manufacturing platform, xCell, the startup allows those deployed in combat zones to order, build, and quickly receive these aircraft on demand. Sema4.ai is building enterprise AI agents that can reason, collaborate, and act. What are "Deep Tech Ventures"? Are we doing enough to support their development in Australia? Deep Tech Ventures are those "which are taking breakthrough technologies from lab to market and using them to address large-scale fundamental problems". At CERI - Centre for Entrepreneurial Research and Innovation we are supporting Deep Tech Ventures such as WaveX: Wave Powered Generators, Gene S and Lixa to solve fundamental problems across energy generation and human health. The road for these startups is difficult and support, particularly funding, is often lacking. $27 million ?? VS ?? $140,000 Like David and Goliath. Vastly different investments, but a surprising outcome. A huge thank you to the Institute for Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovation under the Technical University of Liberec for conducting an independent analysis comparing the communication platform Kudo (with $27 million in funding) to our platform, AiLuvio (with just $140,000 in funding). This analysis clearly shows that even with modest initial investments, it's possible to "leapfrog" industry giants—and that's exactly what's happening with AiLuvio right now. I believe this is a great example of how startups can rapidly outperform large corporations. And we’re just at the beginning of our journey!
