We’ve kicked off the year with a raft of announcements about department store closures. Macy’s has confirmed that 66 shops will shut this year. Kohl’s has earmarked 27 locations for closure. ? Now, these numbers aren’t dramatic. Nor is the process of closing department stores new: it has been going on for years. ? Aside from the human cost, there’s nothing wrong with closing stores. Indeed, it’s actually prudent to constantly trim the estate as consumption habits and local shopping dynamics shift. ? Such a process should, over time, lead to a leaner and more efficient business. The problem for department stores is that this hasn’t happened. ? Over the past 10 years, the number of department stores in the US has declined by 35.0%. Floorspace is down by 36.4%. But here’s the rub: sales per square foot – a proxy for efficiency – have fallen by 5.4%. If you adjust for inflation, sales per square foot are down by 13.5%. ? In theory, that shouldn’t be the case. Consolidation of department stores should increase sales density. And presumably, the stores closed are the weaker ones, which should automatically lift the number. ? That this has happened shows that, over this time, department stores have not fixed the core of their businesses. Closing stores has often been a reaction to failure, not a remedy for it.? ? In other words, closing stores needs to be accompanied by a very clear program to engineer a winning proposition for those stores that remain.
