Their latest breakthrough introduces a sodium-ion battery capable of charging within seconds, representing a remarkable advancement in the field. This innovation tackles critical limitations of current sodium-ion batteries, notably addressing challenges related to power output and charging times. By integrating distinct anode and cathode materials, the researchers have developed a hybrid system with high energy density and rapid charge-discharge rates. The success of this development lies in the optimized synthesis methods employed. Through the use of two distinct metal-organic frameworks, the team has enhanced electrode performance, resulting in improved kinetics and overall battery efficiency. Additionally, the synthesis of a high-capacity cathode material further contributes to the battery's impressive performance characteristics. A team at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has developed a hydrogen production system leveraging a water-splitting process with a unique, water-soluble electrolyte. This approach ensures not only stable hydrogen generation but also minimizes fire risks typically associated with hydrogen production. The innovative system integrates a high-performance zinc-air battery, which powers hydrogen production autonomously. At the heart of this system is a new, high-activity, and long-lasting catalyst that facilitates three critical reactions at low temperatures, making it both efficient and easy to implement. Korea to Invest Over $350 mn in iLED Technology According to Pulse by Maeil Business News Korea, The South Korean government will invest 484 billion won ($353.7 million) over an eight-year period to develop inorganic light-emitting diode technology and establish an ecosystem. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on Thursday that a project to develop and promote inorganic LED technology and its ecosystem passed the national research and development project evaluation committee’s preliminary feasibility study. Inorganic LEDs are self-emitting displays that use inorganic materials, such as LEDs, as the light source. They are emerging as the next-generation display after organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) thanks to their superiority in both brightness and power consumption. A research team led by Dr. Ji Haeng Yu at the Hydrogen Research Department of the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) has developed a new manufacturing technology for solid oxide #electrolysis cell (SOEC) #stacks. The #SOEC #stack developed by the team has a capacity of 8 kW and can produce 5.7 kg of hydrogen per day. ? In South Korea, several companies and government-funded research institutions are developing SOEC technology, but there is a considerable technological gap compared to leading groups abroad. In response, the KIER research team developed a domestic SOEC stack manufacturing technology through technological independence. The research team first improved the separator plate manufacturing technology to reduce manufacturing costs and shorten the production time. To prevent hydrogen and oxygen from mixing and to ensure they flow properly, channels must be created on the upper and lower surfaces of the separator plates. Currently, these channels are made by mechanically and chemically milling the material. To overcome this, the team applied a press forming method that creates these channels by pressing a pattern of projections, similar to stamping, with an irregular structure arrangement. While the existing process could produce a maximum of 100 separator plates per day, using the press forming method allows for the production of more than 1,000 plates per day, thus improving both the manufacturing cost and time. ? Furthermore, to ensure that the electricity supplied to the stack is used without loss, the design maximizes the contact area between the cell and the separator plate, allowing each cell to perform uniformly and at an optimized level. Additionally, the application of brazing technology to securely seal the stacked components reduced the use of glass sealing material by half compared to conventional methods. This approach ensures that the stack can minimize hydrogen leakage even in the face of thermal shock or rapid temperature changes, thus maintaining stable performance. ? The 8-kW single stack, manufactured using the research team’s technology, operated stably for 2,500 hours and produced 5.7 kg of #hydrogen per day, demonstrating the largest hydrogen production capacity in #SouthKorea. ? The developed #manufacturing #technology, which possesses both mass production capability and reliability, has been transferred to Samsung Electro-Mechanics, aiming to enter the SOEC field, and to Bumhan Fuel Cell, a company specializing in #fuelcells. In the future, the companies that have acquired the technology and the research team are expected to accelerate domestication through collaborative research.
