Are you a collaborator? Does your organization welcome collaboration? Many in the management ranks or organizations often talk about collaboration. While the interest or intent exists in many cases, I frequently see that the circumstances lacking. This Harvard Business Review article highlights some reasons parties might seek to collaborate. Limited resources and expertise are common triggers to becoming more open in working with others. It can also be a reason to mitigate risks. An interest in collaboration is not enough. Parties need to understand the enabling factors for mutually beneficial efforts. While not an exhaustive list, it helps to understand: - Roles and responsibilities - Boundaries, flexibilities, and timelines - Allocated resources of all sorts - Benefits vs costs (and risks) - Defined goals - And an exit criteria (upon achievement or breaking out if things did not work as planned) Too often, I see, outweighed self-interested agenda or an inability to change specific rules and processes within orgs or their budget/planning cycles become a barrier to collaboration. Less often, I see passionate visionaries with high influence within their orgs lead collaborations. We need more of that.?? Fashionably, over the past decade, I’ve noted a growing interest in MOUs and announcements without actions. As if signalling collaboration and doing not much about it is a meaningful activity. ??
