Based on my personal experience, after graduating from college, my fiancée and I lived in a 1,503-square-foot apartment in Lancaster, PA, for which we paid $1,650 monthly. When we moved to Traverse City, MI, we downsized to a 700-square-foot apartment and paid $1,135 monthly. We made this change to save money and eventually get into real estate investing. This allowed us to purchase our first duplex and begin house hacking.
