#EngAGE25 Celebration ~ PDX All Ages Radio Hour! Home Forward and EngAGE joined together to bring storytelling classes to the Unthank Plaza and Rosenbaum Plaza affordable housing communities in Portland, OR, in 2018. At a special culminating event performance, we celebrated the participants with a live radio hour dedicated to hearing their stories and educating Portland about the power of artistic opportunity. Soon after, we broadcast the show in two parts on Experience Talks on 90.7 KPFK-FM. The best way to learn is by hearing the stories of others.
Yesterday, I had the privilege and opportunity to hear Haben Girma deliver a keynote address at this year’s CSUN Assistive Technology Conference. If you are unfamiliar with Haben, she is the first deaf blind person to graduate from Harvard Law School and is currently a human rights lawyer dedicating her work to advancing disability justice. To Haben, disability is not a deterrent. Instead, she sees disability as an opportunity for innovation. In her speech, she told us about how she grew up asking herself how she could gain access to the community. The library did not have any braille books. The schools she attended were designed for sight and hearing students. The first slide of Haben’s presentation said disabled people drive innovation. For Haben, and many others in the disabled community, if they want access, they needed to come up with solutions to gain that access. So, she adapted and learned how to participate in the community – not limiting herself to braille and sign language, but learning technologies that allow her to type so that others that do not understand sign language or read braille, were also able to communicate with her. She's been able to communicate directly with President Obama, then-Vice President Joe Biden, among many others, using this technology. I could go on about the amazing feats Haben has accomplished. But I encourage you to read her memoir, follow her on her pages and participate in the conversations she’s started. When we created CourseArc, our driving force has always been access. As an educator, I saw the limitations technology had in the classroom and in online education. Together with my co-founder, Bethany Meyer, we wanted to change that. CourseArc was founded to address issues of lackluster products on the market that did not address major accessibility gaps. Creating and helping others to create accessible online content and courses remains at the forefront of what we do. As an able-bodied person, I know I do not experience the world the way a person with disabilities might. I also know that the first way to learn is to listen. It is an honor to hear Haben’s personal story, and to meet and hear the stories of many others with disabilities here at CSUN. If you are here are CSUN and would like to connect, please reach out!
