When was the last time you scrolled through your feed and thought: Is this real? In?today’s polarised world, with AI-generated deepfakes, the line between truth and falsehood grows increasingly blurred. In this second-to-last installment of a series on "Dataism and Capitalism" for The AfroDiscourse, we delve into the complex relationship between the nature of knowledge, trust, and the African experience. At the heart of this article lies a controversial claim: that dataism, as a culmination of Western modernity, represents a fundamental distrust in the reality of the world. The author argues that both the radical Enlightenment and Romanticism, in their own ways, have contributed to a negation of man's openness to transcendence, suggesting that dataism's reduction of the world to mere information is a manifestation of this underlying distrust. Countering this stance, the article proposes that the trust required to affirm the reality of the world is inseparable from the pursuit of truth and knowledge. This trust, the author asserts, is necessarily an "incipient trust in God" – a recognition of the world and of one's own self as a gift, and an acknowledgment of the goodness that lies behind the contingent world. In the context of Africa's ongoing encounter with Western modernity, the author challenges Africans to embrace this trust in truth and in the divine, to actively open ourselves to the world beyond the digital realm and engage in a contemplative approach to the realities that surround us. This, the article suggests, is the trust that we must foster in the face of the spreading influence of dataism and the capitalist ethos.
