The AIAA New England Section is organizing an in-person seminar at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Come and listen to Dr Phil Hattis, Draper on Placing Americans on the Moon: A Look at the Technical and Political Contexts Getting people to the Moon requires sustained effort to enable applicable, advanced technical capability development. That necessarily occurs in the context of needed political support to fund human spaceflight programs. The technological and political circumstances from the inception to completion of Apollo program will be reviewed. That environment will be compared with and contrasted to the circumstances surrounding subsequent US human spaceflight programs with a focus on how that has impacted efforts to return to the Moon and to go beyond. Dr. Hattis has been at Draper since 1974. Technical areas of responsibility have included:Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) and systems engineering for launch, space, lunar landing, planetary landing, hypersonic, missile defense, and airdrop vehicles. He was the technical lead for the Space Shuttle Orbit Flight Control and numerous flight systems since then. He is currently is working on the next generation of human lunar landing systems. He served four years on the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board, participated in program and technology review teams for NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Research Council, and was elected to AIAA national leadership positions. #MARS -"...This achievement provides a glimpse into how spacecraft could use optical communications in future, enabling higher-data-rate communications of complex scientific information as well as highdefinition imagery & video in support of humanity's next giant leap: sending humans to Mars. "We downlinked about 10 minutes of duplicated spacecraft data during a pass on April 8," said Meera Srinivasan, the project's operations lead at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. "Until then, we'd been sending test and diagnostic data in our downlinks from Psyche. This represents a significant milestone for the project by showing how optical communications can interface with a spacecraft's radio frequency comms system." Show Me Quality Consulting is making an impact on zero gravity testing efforts for the next generation of NASA spacesuits. ? In 2021, a team from SMQC’s partner company ASA and SMQC Chief Quality Officer Trent Russell conducted a Commercial Aviation Services inspection on Zero-G in Fairbanks, Alaska. Zero-G performs parabolic flight maneuvers in which on the downward pitch the flight experiences about 10 seconds of microgravity. This is enough for researchers and scientists to gather data in a gravity free environment, which otherwise would only be achievable in outer space.?The inspection results allowed NASA to approve Zero-G as a qualified operator to conduct these missions for NASA. ? Recently, Zero-G, in collaboration?with the Collins Aerospace, conducted microgravity tests of the new NASA spacesuits designed for use on the International Space Station.? ? What spectacular failure teaches us about contract manufacturing. My one of my favorite failures is NASAs attempt to place a climate satellite in Mars orbit in 1998. The result was a spectacular crash due to the failure of converting imperial units into the metric system.?It’s a perfect example of the basic failures Amy Edmondson, professor at Harvard Business School, talks about in her book, The right kind of wrong. The satellite was designed and built by Lockheed Martin Astronautics, who provided crucial acceleration data in the English system of inches, feet, and pounds. NASA engineers and navigators expected units using the metric system. https://lnkd.in/dXvbmVQn Spectacularly, this mistake was identified and captured in minutes at two separate meetings of navigators before launch. But ultimately not corrected. The result was that the satellite navigated dangerously close to Mars,?fell out of orbit, and crashed to the surface. I think this example illustrates one of the key pitfalls in alliance management and contract manufacturing. NASA and Lockheed Martin are both hugely successful and competent organizations. But if proper attention is not paid to governance, implicit assumptions, and psychological safety, there is a high risk that details will trip you up. Deliberately building trust is particularly important when introducing a new CDMO to your supply chain or entering into a relationship with a new customer. Basic failures are unavoidable, but the consequences are not! In a monumental milestone for both our School and Western Australia’s space industry, three Curtin University satellites reached the International Space Station (ISS) last Tuesday, marking the first time a Western Australian business payload has left the Earth’s atmosphere. The Binar 2, 3 and 4 satellites launched from NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Florida aboard a SpaceX rocket on Sunday night (WST), before docking at the ISS on Tuesday. Binar's principal investigator, John Curtin Distinguished Professor Phil Bland, said the mission was a significant achievement and he was exceptionally proud of the team who made the milestone possible. “Seeing the launch of three world-class spacecrafts, designed and built right here by Curtin students and staff and carrying WA industry payloads is mind-blowing,” Professor Bland said. This new mission marks an important milestone for WA, with the satellites carrying instrumentation from CSIRO, and Perth-based communications systems company AVI. AVI’s transmitters will be tested in the space environment, while CSIRO is testing how new materials can protect electronics against radiation. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration has awarded Elon Musk’s SpaceX to decommission the International Space Station (ISS). The contract involves US$843 Million for the safe de-orbit of a 430-tonne microgravity laboratory, as the conclusion of the International Space Station Program that began in 1998. Led by five partner agencies, Canadian Space Agency | Agence spatiale canadienne, European Space Agency - ESA, JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, NASA, and the State Space Corporation “Roscosmos”, the technical lifetime of primary structure will conclude by 2030. Thus, NASA has decided to retire the ISS by guiding it into the remote Pacific Ocean area at the beginning of the next decade. During the descent into the Earth’s atmosphere, the space station will burn up, break up, and vaporise into fragments of various sizes. Interestingly, the de-commissioning of the ISS will mark the onset of enabling the private industry development of commercially owned and operated space stations, including Blue Origin, Nanoracks, and Northrop Grumman—to develop their private space stations, on which NASA and other customers could lease space for professional crews and tourists.
