The health, environmental and climate arguments for green energy are utterly compelling. The politics is often hijacked by the same Greenwashing liars who have held back the energy transition for decades. ...but economic eventually trumps politics. The Chinese government has spent 10 years building the foundations for the "Vision Zero" economy so compellingly described for the UK by Chris Skidmore in his paper of that title. It's really paying off for China: (summary from www.wedon'thavetime.org). "Clean-energy sectors – such as low-carbon power, grids, energy storage, electric vehicles (EVs), and railways – contributed 11.4tn yuan ($1.6tn) to China’s economy in 2023. This accounted for “all of the growth in Chinese investment and a larger share of economic growth than any other part of the economy”. This was driven, in particular, by the “new three” industries of solar power, EVs and batteries". The UK is letting this opportunity slip, thanks to effective "State Capture" by fossil fuel interests. In 2023, the UK government handed out oil and gas licences like confetti, and sabotaged a CFD wind auction by setting the strike price unfeasibly low, resulting in no bids at all being received.

Under the Biden-Harris Administration, clean energy is booming and the South is leading the way thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act. Of the nearly 150,000 clean energy jobs added, the South accounted for more than one-third of the growth in 2023.

The?report, released Tuesday by the nonpartisan business group E2, found an uptick in employment in the clean energy industry in 2023, fueled by the?Inflation Reduction Act. The sweeping 2022 law included?hundreds of billions of dollars?to spur?emissions cuts and help the U.S. economy transition away from fossil fuels to fight climate change. Clean energy and clean vehicle companies added nearly 150,000 new jobs in 2023, the first full year of the Inflation Reduction Act, the report found. Of that total, the South added more than 54,000 clean energy jobs, accounting for 36% of all new jobs in the region. By comparison, the Midwest, Northeast and West combined added 95,000 clean energy jobs in 2023. The law, known as IRA, has become a cornerstone of the Biden administration’s environmental record, and in her campaign for president, Vice President Kamala?Harris has touted her tie-breaking vote to pass the legislation in the Senate. The employment sectors analyzed in E2’s “Clean Jobs America” report include clean vehicles, renewable energy, battery storage, grid modernization and biofuels. The findings suggest that Southern states, where Republicans traditionally have a political stronghold, are benefitting from the IRA, even though Republicans in the House and Senate unanimously opposed the bill. The report found that Alabama, Kentucky and Oklahoma were among the states with the fastest growth in clean energy jobs, based on percentage increases. California, Florida and Texas — the three most populous states — led in the total number of jobs in the clean energy industry, E2 found. Across the U.S., clean energy jobs grew by roughly 4.5% last year, far more than the country’s overall job growth rate of 1.5%, according to the report. Clean energy jobs now account for about 1 in 16 new jobs created in the U.S. E2 has released annual reports on clean energy job growth in the U.S. since 2015. Given the timing of this year’s report, the findings may have? implications for the presidential election?in November. ..."

The Prime Minister has today officially launched the?UK-led Global Clean Power Alliance today, in a major boost for the world’s clean energy transition.??To get on track for a scenario that limits the increase in global average temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the IEA estimates that spending on clean energy needs to double in advanced economies and in China by 2035 – but in other developing countries, the required increase is to more than six times the amounts being invested today.??Most of the required investment will need to come from the private sector, both domestic and international. ??The first ‘Mission’ of the Global Clean Power Alliance will therefore be the Finance Mission, which will be published today and co-chaired by Brazil.?This Finance Mission will harness the?political leadership needed to unlock private finance on a huge scale, mobilising the resources needed to accelerate the global clean energy transition. https://lnkd.in/dRJ8GxQc
