A BEPS is coming to Maryland and buildings will have to meet interim emission targets starting in 2030, and net-zero direct emissions by 2040. In the meantime, owners of buildings >35,000SF are required to report their building's energy use to MDE annually using the EPAs Energy Star Portfolio Manager. When it comes to complying with BEPS standards, my two most valuable lessons learned are: ?? Accurate benchmarking is key in understanding a building's baseline and putting a compliance roadmap in place. Many cities with BEPS standards have additional benchmarking requirements that go beyond what is typical for Energy Star. Understanding these requirements can sometimes make a significant difference during compliance planning. ?? Deep retrofits and building electrification require a lot of time, capital, and planning. This week, US Senators John Barrasso (R-WY) and Joe Manchin (I-WV) introduced the Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024, which aims to accelerate the permitting process for energy and infrastructure projects within the US. The lawmakers argue this legislation will create jobs, lower energy prices, and secure American energy and critical mineral reserves all the while speeding up the process of bringing new energy projects online by easing the permitting process for transmission. The environmental community is split on the legislation, with those focused on clean energy viewing the bill favorably but those focused on conservation opposed.
